To be fair, you buy a hat like that in real life, you probably are gonna have some rocks hucked at you. I imagine the process of purchasing a trilby is not judgement-free.

More likely, they are going to hint at it, several times, with widely contradicting implications.

I don't even think there'll be hints, honestly. Story-wise, the actual wondering is more important than the mystery itself. I could see characters speculating or something, but that's about it.
