Never leave them at the default. Always lower them to a much more reasonable number.

And don´t worry, we are all busy, I will see the result this weekend. About Tal: He said he had a program for normal bumps, but he couldn´t reproduce the exact effect manually =(. We will see, I told him maybe the tear and wear can be done with the alpha channel (just the curved metal, you know, just to not leave them as completely plane surfaces)
So would a [I]modified[/I] torus work for that front handle, or should I look at doing something else entirely?

When creating a new mesh, look at the left tool bar, there should be a Vertex count (or face, I can´t remember). For example, you create a cylinder. Well, that cylinder has 32 faces by default. Before moving it or doing anything, you change that number with the number of faces you want it to have (6 for hexagons, 5 for pentagons, etc)
