The middle version could look pretty ok if you toned down the intensity of applied paints. Sort of like the Summer style of the Fast Learner. The item itself is great, by the way!
I was actually playing around with the idea of a military recruit set for the Scout just a couple days ago.
I wont sketch the set now since you made this hat, so if you want to make a scattergun to go with it, feel free to steal my idea; A sawed-off WW2 sniper rifle. It would look brutal, carefree and somewhat illogical. Perfect for the Scout.

It's nice, but it seems a bit too big to be instantly recognizable as a shotgun. If I saw that engie running towards me in bad lighting, I wouldn't be sure if it was an Engineer or a Pyro.

I really like the idea. So I'm going to steal it for concept art. Just one thing though.
It wouldn't work with FaN animations. It could work with Scattergun animations if I add a lever. But would people care if there was no ammo drum or feed? It wouldn't make sense, but the current Scattergun animations also don't make sense.

what size is it compared to players? because it's weirdly thin, the cans will make it seem too small if it's dispenser sized, and I don't know if being bigger than the dispenser would count against it.

Huh. I didn't for a moment consider the initials of that name. Oh well, the Horatian Cathode could work just as well.
I also considered 'Cathode to x' as a name suggestion, but I couldn't think of a good x. The most famous classical 'ode to..' seems to be 'Ode to Joy' (written in 1785), but 'Cathode to Joy' wouldn't make a lot of sense as sappers aren't very joy-related. There seems to be a handful of different poems titles 'Ode to despair', but I don't think any of them are famous enough to work. And anything titled 'Ode to Destruction' or something similar apparently has to be a modern heavy metal anthem.
According to Google, this seems to be the most famous ode. I feel honored.
