The Chao face expressions were random. There were many different smiles and eye combinations.

Don't forget that the ball above their heads usually morphs into a different symbol when their emotions change. (When the Chao is happy it turns into a heart or when he's sad it turns into a spiral. The Dark Chao didn't have a ball but a spiky thing instead, and the Hero Chao had a Halo.)

I think the yellow-ish part and the dot should be paintable and the paint also slightly changes the tint of the whole chao (I think I've seen it done with a few items). That way it could be like you've been giving it a specific capsule thing like they had in SA2 to make it a certain type of chao; like how if you gave it the purple flying capsule or birds, it would start turning a purple tint when it's young and not close to evolving. Like purple paint could probably do something close to this (minus the stuff on the back):

Then there's always style for that or paintable tie only.

Wii? damn I feel old, I'm still playing SA2 on my Dreamcast. Not that I haven't completed it already, just, those chao man, I just can't leave them on the Dreamcast all alone...cold...scared.

I said the same thing. I looked into ESRB ratings of Spiral Knights though and apparently it was unlabeled (subject to be M) because of the online interactions.

But in Dota 2 there's actually an artstyle to keep unlike here so I'm not sure we'll ever get any promo in Dota that's not a taunt/announcer.
