I realize you're going for the tube look, but that doesn't mean it has to have such sharp edges and simple geometry.

Simply create another face by extruding, duplicating, or whatever other method you use; sink it in a little; and make it point inwards.

Normally i remove edge loops rather than merge layers but when i know where my UV drops after merging the verts, i try and realign the UV to the texture. Valve's LOD rule is normally half the original model.[/QUOTE] Another rule is to fix your UVs as little as possible, as moving a UV vertex is still moving a vertex (according to that tutorial on the Valve wiki), so be careful not to mess around with your UVs too much.

That is why I said that I only move uv's when I know exactly what will happen. Yes, never make it a practice to toy around with your uv's especially if your a beginner.
