Not quite. Our items were done by three people. Our third, Robot Joe/Naburus, did the design for the items and did textures with Nidhogg. He doesn't have an FP account, so he's not really well known around here. Seeing as he designed the Wan Hu, he was pretty much essential in making sure we had something awesome.

This seems like a nice time to force their hand on critglow though. Especially if you do it, but then pose that this will destroy the important and invaluable readability that crit glow gives

I've looked through all the c_items textures, there's a bunch that are 1024 and could be 512'd.
The backburner is wasting 80% of it's UV and could also be halved.
Sniper has some bodygroups that don't need to exist, so does Soldier.
Basically there's a lot of really easy optimizations that can be made, and should be made, before resorting to making this weapon use paint for team colours.
Other stuff, that's just off the top of my head.
Heh, I even offered to remove the blue texture from the Hot Dogger while making it paintable. I don't think it's optimization.
Fun fact: if a weapon doesn't glow when crit boosted, a user has no visual indication at all they are buffed by a buff banner

The Hitman's Heatmaker looks like it's crit boosted when it's in Focus mode, which is really confusing and misleading.
If Valve pressures you to make the sign paintable with the knowledge that crit glows would be ruined, than it seems as if they would be prioritizing customization over gameplay. I obviously don't know if Valve does know this or not, but this still can't end well.
