A developer only leaves a title when it stops being profitable. Like EVE online and World of Warcraft, Team Fortress 2 is still profitable.

Your argument hinges on Valve doing this for no other reason than sheer philanthropy, which is not the case. Valve only continue to update the game because the production cost for any given update is- at most- a single percent of the profit generated by it.
