I haven't had a hat drop since shortly after the demo and soldier update.
I've bought $10 worth of keys and had 3 crates drop.
So I call shenanigans on this theory.
I got 3 ScoRes from crates and no drops for the rest of the week.
I've been buying stuff, and I haven't had any out of the ordinary drops.
You just got lucky.

I bought a few gifts for friends, afterwards, soldier drill sergeant hat dropped, pretty crazy coincidence but i don't think it's anything more than that
I bought a name tag, then one of my next drops was a Pyro Beanie. I think there might be some truth to this theory.

I doubt what you say is true, although I hope myself wrong.
Perhaps then, me receiving a fucking gunslinger and an equalizer from my last two crates wouldn't have feel like such a rip-off.
I've opened around 8 crates in total.
My drops have been shitty.

Spent quite a bit on keys for crates the last couple of days and I've found 5 Unusuals. And if it wasn't an Unusual, it was a good hat/paint/nametag, or something good. Got extremely lucky I guess.
I unlocked a crate got a Scottish resistance and next drop I got a sober stuntman.

I personally bought 2 keys, opened 2 crates and got 2 weapons. Equalizer and L'tranger. Nothing else than a razorback dropped for me in 2 days.
Bought about 6 keys this week.. let's see if I'll get any good drops today

I bought two Australium Gold paint buckets and I found a Sergeant's Drill Hat shortly afterwards. It could all be a coincidence though, we should not be coming to conclusions so haphazardly.
