I guess it works best when it makes sense or suggest some functionnality, I have to admit I tend to abuse of rubber and metal straps on my items :v: it always makes it look cooler and helps balancing colors.

Nope. You have to do it in the .vmt.
*EDIT* Or maybe that's what you meant? To have your model render with different colors in HLMV you have to add a line to your .vmt including something like
