This contradicts an earlier explanation that said Gorge started as a 5cp map. Originally the creator wrote on Reddit or something that 5Gorge was the original
It wasn't the original, I remember valve saying they were interested in a competitive attack defend and then bam gorge
My bet is that they do an interesting technical post on the blog to remind people that it does in fact exist so that the news of the major update spreads faster.
what if they add a mapping creator on the next major update to be more easier for people to make maps...It might be a similar update like the one on Portal 2...*sigh*I can only dream...

Unlikely. TF2 maps are way more in-depth then Portal 2 test chambers.
Am I the only one who thinks that this blog post is bit useless? Everybody who is interested in map making already knows it and those who aren't interested don't care.
Community Map Pack 2 coming soon?
Community Map Pack 2 coming soon?
There has been a recent dynamic payload map contest on TF2Maps, right?
People who still "like" tf2 but hate what it has become and since some of the mods agree with them they basically run the show and troll the fuck out of any thread saying anything positive about tf2.
In the defense of TF2M, you became very inactive before/right when things started to change for the better. You should check back for a little, say hi, maybe play some TF2 with us sometime. :) But if that is what you see TF2M as, thats fine. I won't complain.
@Zanna, the Dyn, Payload contest is not affiliated with Valve, and so if they want a map of ours, they haven't made any contact with anyone. A lot of the maps will still be in development post-contest. If one of the maps is picked up, then you could see it sometime in the fall/christmas.

Oh hi frozen, didnt know you joined.
That was really fucking cool to read.

Yup, been around for a little while. Nothing too big.
Map makers deserve more credit than they get. Do they even get any money? Aside from the map stamps which barely anybody buys.

Yes, every map gets bought by valve for a few thousand

Fuck, really?
I had no idea.
Holy shit, I should start making maps...
Holy shit, I should start making maps...
Didn't you say you were going to learn to model?
Yea, the average price for a map is around 3k USD. Stamp money from what I hear is semi-decent for popular maps.
If you want money, you want to model. Maps going into the game is becoming less and less. It's a sad fact of life.
I buy at least a single stamp out of every community map. It costs even less than the crappy coffee we have at Uni, and those cents are going to a particular rather than to Nestle.

While it is a very nice sum it's still very small compared to people who make items make.
Well, that's the deal. I make maps for the sake of it and not because I could make money with them.
I came to facepunch to learn to model because I thought that not being able to have custom props was restricting my creativity and was why I couldn't make proper maps.
Then I realized it's because I'm lazy as all hell.
Man, I thought there was some more magic other than sketches and trial and error.
I dunno, blindfolding everyone and forcing them to play Scout or something.
Didn't you say you were going to learn to model?
You should take literally everything I say in terms of future plans with a grain of salt because 102% of the time I'm too lazy to go through with them
Anyone have a vague idea of the income a mapper gets from stamps?
I like making maps... But I hate detailing them.
Anyone have a vague idea of the income a mapper gets from stamps?
Depends on the map... TF2M did have a counter on who made X amount. I honestly forget. Just load up the map and where ever it says XXXX Supporters of that map, multiply that by .89 (if a mapper does a map all by himself, no collaborators, he gets ~89 cents per stamp. This decreases a little depending on collaborators and whatever else they did) ... So, since the inception of stamps, it could be around like 10k for the less popular maps.
Some of the mappers haven't seen the money yet due to international laws of some sort (I think Icarus and/or YM is due for a VERY healthy check). Some modelers I know have this issues too.
