do you have many programs opened? Try to close all the programs before play because it could be a ping problem.
Maybe make your settings REEEEEEEAAAAAAAALY low? Or try getting a new router, plugins, all of that stuff, EVEN IF IT'S NEW. And maybe turn off any anti-virus programs running in the background? How about turning off any program that requires a lot of prosesser work?
Does this happen only in Tf2? Post pc specs.
It's a wireless router so there might be interference in the connection. What's the card that's receiving the connection in your pc?
I'm not sure, but I suspect it's all valve games. How do I check my specs? My computer is fairly good.
http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showthread.php?t=38891
Might be the same solution with tf2.
They say that it doesn't work anymore, also tried their alternatives.
At least my ISP always says to check if it (internet) works without router.
Also you should check servers you are using, try another servers. And check if nothing else is using internet, like torrents.
I tried many other servers, same thing.
Turn off multicore processing
It's off.
Contact your ISP. I had the same problem, different game. Contacted the game support, as I couldn't stay online for more than a minute, and they told me it was my internet blocking their connection. I rang up my ISP, they told me that the game was blocked for some odd reason, they just allowed a connection and the problem was solved.
This I haven't tried for this particular router, but I tried it for my old one, they said the line was fine when it clearly wasn't, they have still yet to get back to me.
So it seems that only one resolution exist - call\contact your ISP.
You don't have any torrent programs open, do you? I had this same problem, but it would only occur when I had Bittorrent open.

If your on vista. You can try this. Works for a bunch of people.

http://www.piriform.com/speccy, you should really see if it's other valve games though, would help.
Try resetting the router, by pressing that little button behind the router.
[editline]17th October 2010[/editline]
Or try making you the "Default DMZ" in the router settings.
What is his ISP anyway. I would say don't use wireless, connect to a MODEM. Wireless always turns off on me.
switch to broadband internet...
/thread... wheres my hats??? j/k
not quite, cable can be pulled out and the connection will be halted but recovered after cable being pulled in, even without VPN disconnecting. However it cable really damaged you will have pretty high ping, as connection being interrupted over and over.
High ping should be notable in other applications as well and the high ping should be displayed in the server browser in that case, too. Then the question would be "why is my ping so high?". Which is why I asked if it's just TF2.
Do you have other online games like TF2 like Counter-Strike with which you could check if it's the game or the connection in general?
inb4 "sorry folks forgot to turn off utorrent" :v:

I pressed every button on my router. And I heard about DMZ, but I need a step by step guide on how to do this.

I will try other games now.

No torrent programs opened or running in the background.

I will try this when everyone's out of suggestions. This is pretty much last priority as I really hate O2 customer "service".
Specs:

power cycle your router and computer or switch off your computer for a day.
turn it off, then turn it back on again
where are my hats
The only thing I can suggest It's
Disconnect your router, only connect your modem everytime you want to play
I think that it's something with an internal firewall of the router
This sometimes works for me, try opening the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and go the processes tab and right click on Steam.exe. Go to change priority, and change it to low.
The problem being that steam is making a connection with all of the servers that you refreshed in the server list and your router is being overrun with connections, so by changing the priority down to low, it isn't as bad. However, this will not fully fix the problem. I still haven't found how to completely fix it myself.
as i lurked around O2's site it seems that they have a heavy traffic management system. They probably are blocking you when you play TF2 due to traffic usage.

I tried L4D2 and CS:S, I didn't get disconnected.

I want something that will fix it forever, and this didn't work anyways.

So what would the solution to this be? Bear in mind that I tested 2 source games and they worked fine.
Most of the time when I have an internet problem with my router I just disconnect the power supply for 20 seconds or so and then plug it back in.
Does it only happen when there's a certain amount of players in the server?

delete team fortress folder, disable steam cloud for tf2.
if doesn't work - reinstall game completely, delete game's gcf files and game folder.

On L4D2 there where 4 players, and I tried an empty server on CS:S. My favorites list on TF2 are usually around 19-30 people playing on each.
So your suggesting I should disconnect and reconnect my router every time I get disconnected from the server?
do you have many programs opened? Try to close all the programs before play because it could be a ping problem.
Nope.

I'll try this, but my computer is very capable of running this game.

No, I mean unplug the router from the power supply so it turns off (right now), wait 20 seconds, plug it back in, let it connect and all that jazz and then try playing again.
Also I had a problem similar to this on my old ISP and my friend said it was a bandwidth issue but I doubt it.
Close your server browser and use console to connect to servers. The server browser lags my internet to hell in basically all the source games I play.
Did you update your Wireless driver aswell? Are you using Windows Vista?
Computer specs would help.

just press Page Up button on your keyboard several times.
Have you used the Vista disable wireless search thingy?
Vista sometimes likes to search for wireless networks every 30 seconds or so, there is a small program you run once and it makes all the changes for you, I'll see if I can find a link to it

I tried that too, forgot to mention it. I'm re-installing TF2 now.

Have you tried unplugging the router?
I tried L4D2 and CS:S, I didn't get disconnected.
So the problem pretty much has to do with TF2's files and it's not a general connection issue. That should narrow it down.
Try this (after making a backup if you use configs or skins) if STEAM support didn't already tell you to:
1. Go to \Steam\SteamApps\account_name\
2. Delete the Team Fortress 2 folder
3. Go to Steam's Library, rightclick on the game and select Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache
4. Let Steam restore all files you need except for the TF folder, then start the game so a new TF folder is created
They told me to do this in case my gamefiles are corrupt, which might be the case here. Apparently deleting the files before verifying integrity solves some problems were corrupted data isn't overwritten by Steam.
Edit: okay, you're reinstalling TF2, nvm then, that should also do the trick just as well. :v:
