The theory is that maybe the more items you have, the more letters will appear on each.

I'ma go on a TF2 server to pass the time. Hopefully by then Valve will shed some light on this subject.

I think these new items will be able to be crafted into something after some kind of update/reveal. It would be odd if they were completely useless for anything other than the Arthur Conan Doyle line.
