Man, I have no idea what the etiquette for playing with new steam friends would be. The majority of my current list are just folks that I got along with ingame, but then I never see or talk to them ever again. Do you just start talking to this people out of the blue, like "hey wanna play a game of tf2"? Nobody's ever done that to me! I'm not even sure what my reaction would be to that. Would I even remember them? The fact that clans exist make my head spin. Do those people know each other in person first, or actively seek em out or what? So weird to think about.
