He isn't confident that he made a "direct" profit and knows enough to both feel terrible and look like he feels terrible. Yeah he might've been in a bad mood, but at the end of the day you're down less that you wanted and he's up more than he wanted. If he was selling the unusual he knows the prices and was most likely trying to get a little extra.
