TTYD was the perfect blend of RPG, Story and Atmosphere to me. It's quite honestly one of the best gamecube titles, if not the best.
You had the original formula slightly reworked to implement the stage theme/effects, and the addition of an audience who you need to keep on your side to have any means of recharging your star power, having them be part of some boss fights, and of course them tossing you items. Luigi would sometimes be down there too, which i found a nice little touch.
It even had a pretty damn dark story for a Mario game, but Intelligent Systems knows how to do dark stories while keeping it kid-friendly enough for Nintendo's standards. And of course, the ways you could actually game over by choosing the wrong words (Or in your possible opinion, the right words) was a cherry on top the super-fudge ice cream banana split with sprinkles sundae.
