Sure, Flaregun has range. But most maps when you are shooting from a range near a control point, intel, or anything of that sort, there's guaranteed a medkit for them to just shrug it off. If you are able to ht the same person again, good job. But range will make that a harder task.
The shotgun on the other hand is great for picking off enemies trying to run away from your flamethrower, and is deadly at close range as you would expect. So once you set someone on fire and then shoot them with one shot, they're dead for sure.
I always find myself going back to the old reliable flaregun, I can't explain it
I was happy using the detonator and flarejumping to reach certain places, same with the reserve shooter and airblasting enemies and then crit them to death, but I coudn't abandon the flaregun

doesn't the same apply with the flare gun then? You can just set them on fire and shoot a flare at them, doing approximately the same amount of damage, without the need for meatshots.
Even if they're not on fire, you'll still do 30+ damage, which is about the same as a mid-range shot from a shotgun.

Mid-range shot from a shotgun does usually around 50+, what're you talking about. Close-range can easily do 80+.

I love the taunt and that allows you to flarejump, but I rather be able to deal more damage to a single target than set a group of people on fire

Well then again, the whole shotgun flaregun debate is kind of silly because this is coming from a guy who was able to kill 8 people in 1 minute as engie with the shotgun and no sentry on a control point... so after that weird incident I always preferred shotgun over everything.

I combo a flare and degreaser often, if not, shotty all the way

some are godawful, but a lot of them are decent and really fun. Wacky races is pretty cool.

they're both viable, it's more about playstyle than anything.

I just go all stock, even the melee, as Pyro. It's more satisfying killing someone with the axe than the axtinguisher.

I've allways liked Stock and Backburner,
backburner is my favorite though.
I use the Backburner. Even if the airblast costs 50 of ammo doesn't means isn't useful. Also I tend to attack by surprise or surround the enemy. So I guess is my best option.
In fact, I don't normally use the stock weapon but I use the unlocks :v:
