I have a feeling the real winners here will be the Vintage Fancy Fedora owners. I just have a feeling. Of all the old hats, that one is still incredibly popular.
TF2 Economy going to completely crash any day now.
With the over priced keys everywhere and on the market then its inevitable
Fedora, Trophy Belt and Stash are one of, if not the best hats in the game.
I can only regret letting my v. Fedora and V. Stash go but I won't give up my V. Belt. No amount of crappy Saxton Hale jokes can make me realise this whole update is a good idea.
I agree with you entirely except with the Fedora, that's second best in my opinion compared to this honhonhon magnet

how is the removal of 9 virtual items going to afect someone who has spent like what, $1k in merchandise?
anyway, they are NOT deleting these hats, they will just stop their distribution. its not the fucking end of the world.

As everyone else in this thread who opposes it, you lack any sort of argument other than "it's not the end of the world, they're just hats." It's not the removal of the hats that people are complaining about, it's the fact Valve would do this in the first place. It's an unexpected, unnecessary action where the community was not involved in making the decision, like Valve has always done in the past. The community is the reason why hats became such a huge success, so removing the origin of that is a slap to the face to the people who take it as such. That is why people think this is very unValve-like, please get off your high-horse and realize what's actually going on here.
What about the Stealth Steeler (robofedora from Mann Up rewards)? We can get a Robo version of Spy's fedora, but not the original deal. :V
And this is why I don't play TF2 any more. The TF2 team only caters updates to traders nowadays it seems.

You're right, MVM, the new weapons and all the bug fixes are all catering to traders only.
Don't deny it Gastric, you know it is true baby <3
So, uh, if they want to make this a regular thing they can only go a few "waves" until contributed items start getting culled.
I can't be the only one just a tad worried about the ramifications that could cause, can I?

They already put holiday restrictions on some community items...
I get that they love using TF2 as a Sandbox, but they should really stop cutting off their retcon routes like that. Nobody liked the item set boni from the Polycount update for example, but since some people have now paid for exactly that, they couldn't take it back, only learn from their mistakes next time.
Valve makes a lot of mistakes and experiments and takes risks, which I absolutely support unless it irrevocably damages existing systems when it doesn't have to.
I don't think I even see the long-term implications of this. They won't do this again with weapons (since they have stats) or community content, and they don't make their own hats anymore anyway, so what's the point? They've already given "old timers" a bonus with the Vintage quality, why this again?
And this is why I don't play TF2 any more. The TF2 team only caters updates to traders nowadays it seems.
It doesn't help that their first move for 2013 actually REMOVES content from the game and adds more for the traders to do, rather then people who play the game for fun.
An old man looks out through a window.
He sees his grandchildren fighting against other mercenaries with their fancy guns.
He sits down and looks at his room.
A trusty shotgun, hanging on display.
A beloved minigun, cherished and preserved for years.
But then the old man notices something in a glass case.
Something that many have forgotten, except him.
Something that is ugly and plain to everyone, except him.
Something that no one would wear in public, except him.
An old football helmet.
It wasn't unusual, it wasn't expensive.
Despite this, it was more important than all the buds, festives, medals, and Bills combined.
It was his very first hat.
He opens the glass case and puts it on gently.
As soon as it rests on his scalp, various memories of his youth flood through his mind.
The day he dominated the entire enemy team, the day he captured the point at the last second, the day he snuck through the enemy base and brought back the briefcase.
All distant memories, brought back to his mind, when he put the helmet on.
He kept it with him, never deleting, trading, or crafting it, despite how much it was worth then.
The old man sobbed, put the hat back in its case, and called eight friends he hadn't seen for years.
He sat down and looked at his fists.
They were wrinkled, but he knew that they were strong.
He looked at his shotgun, still as powerful as it was then.
Finally, he looked at his minigun, as beautiful and as mighty when he first held it.
He stood up, and made up his mind.
He finally decided to come out of retirement with his old team, and do what he did best.
Killing tiny baby men.

True, the only people gaining from this is a small minority of traders. Everyone else just looses. What's Valve hoping to gain from this? Market transaction fees? Or are they poking the hornet's nest to make all future community content in all their multiplayer titles time-limited (kind of like preorder Genuine quality)?

"whats going on here".
if valve REALLY cared about the community as you say, all these bugs, glitches, and horrible promo cosmetics would not even exist, and decisions like this one would not ever be considered beyond the point of a bad joke.
the community has made this game great for the last years? yes they had. yes we have. what does the removal of 9 items has to do anything with the community? absolutely nothing: its a move absolutely focused on traders and the absurd tinkering of a economy test lab that valve has made out of tf2.
even then, its fucking 9 hats, 9 hats that until now were nothing but craft fodder and almost no one gave a shit about until people realised they will not >drop< anymore. they will still exist? yes. you will be able to get them? yes. you will have to pay absurd amounts of money for them? no, and you'd be an idiot if you did so out of a panic attack.
limited edition items already exist in the game in the form of original quality items and you can still get them even when they are no longer being distributed. even vintage quality items are discontinued in the game yet you can get them for basically nothing.
the whole trip for this is purely a nostalgia rush and EVERYONE is overreacting for something that already happens in the game, for an issue that has been a standard since the mannconomy went live. that day tf2 turned into valve's own test ground for the economy experiments.
Oh god, Market it's going to be a hell. I can see people selling normal version of these hats for 3 keys.
When I said the new TF2 team sucks, people laughed at me/rated me dumb. Who's laughing now?
7:20 PM - spencecool: > FANCY FEDORA
7:20 PM - spencecool: welp
7:20 PM - spencecool: i guess i can stop uncrating crates to try and get an unusual fancy fedora
:/
help
I have a sneaking suspicion that this whole thing may just be a spoof paving the way for an update.
Or I could be completely wrong.

If that was the case, I doubt they would have bothered with a serious FAQ.

I can think of something more ridiculous: What about the Bonk Helm? I mean, at least the Stealth Steeler was actually remade to be fit for robots (apparently convenient for humans as well), but the Bonk Boy is literally just a Batter's Helmet with 2 Bonk! Atomic Punches on the sides...
Where's the "Q: Why are you doing this?" and the "A: Because fuck you, that's why. Give us more money!"
remember to email Valve your concerns.
Am I supposed to get a notification of some sort after an email is successfully sent? Because either their captcha system is dicking around with me, or I've probably sent the TF2 team about nine copies of the same message.

so basically, it's valve's game and its their guinea pig, and people who enjoy the simple hats being available outside of trading have to deal with it
because really there's no other possible explaination you're giving me

I have the Spy hat that's basically the fedora but with a card strapped to it.
Close enough?

Yes, that. Damn similar names...

The captcha has always been fickle. Just keep filling it out until you get brought to the screen that says it was successfully sent.
Oh boy, I can't wait to get hounded for my Vintage Fedora and Vintage Picklehaube...
