Retiring Community hats would mean would mean they create an artificial demand for the item from which only they themselves profit (at least, assuming these hats end up on the steam market) Sure, the mann co sales would rise if there's a 2 week announcement beforehand, but it's still the biggest dick move you could possibly make towards contributors
and might jeopardize both Dota and TF2's contributor system, if contributors feel threatened or cheated. [editline]11th January 2013[/editline] oh wow, Facebook is a lot more angry at this than they usually are for dumb things in TF2
and might jeopardize both Dota and TF2's contributor system, if contributors feel threatened or cheated.
To be fair, your post kinda assumes that the system isn't already riddled with flaws, the cynical among us (me) would argue that the contributors largely pander anyway, making pyro head miscs and all class hats and the like, just because they're big sellers
I think probably 75% of contributors in TF2 made their item because they really felt that item should be in the game or they wanted to see it as an item on that class.
And the vast majority of those don't stand a chance of seeing the proverbial light of day.
They already restricted some, it wouldn't be much of a bigger thing.
Some people rely on this for income, it wouldn't just be valve losing money this time. Also I'd imagine the creator would need to give them permission.
I doubt they'll ever "remove" community hats without an extremely good reason. They've done some pretty stupid things (like the set hats) but they've also learned from their mistakes (like the set hats). And it's very well possible that the amount of upsetness this is going to cause will stop them from retiring other hats later on.
oh wow, Facebook is a lot more angry at this than they usually are for dumb things in TF2
I'm kind of disappointed that this is what it took for people to react, hats.
Valve, at least give us the reason why you're removing them. Maybe then we can understand and maybe accept it.
Valve, at least give us the reason why you're removing them. Maybe then we can understand and maybe accept it.
Money.
Valve, at least give us the reason why you're removing them. Maybe then we can understand and maybe accept it.
yea, that would help a lot

It's not the whole Valve, it's (probably mostly) the economist and TF2 team. Also rate me optimistic
DELETED
jesus fucking christ learn to read
Oh come on really, the FIRST HATS in TF2 get SIMPLY DELETED? are you fucking kidding me come on valve [sp]it's a joke right guys? uh heh he he....fuck[/sp]
I miss the bad reading rating. They're just being discontinued as a drop, craft, store item and unusual unbox. Any that exist right now in any quality remain.

Existing contributors would be unaffected, and that the deal changes for new contributors shouldn't be that hard to communicate. Sounds alluring for someone that wants people to manipulate into buying stuff they wouldn't buy otherwise (because it could always randomly drop or be the result of a craft).
Is anyone going to tell the employees who made these?

Oh I see what's happening. Valve are removing their own items from their own game. They will continue doing this until there is nothing but Community Content left, then they will surrender TF2 to the best community contributors, and it will no longer be a Valve game.
jesus fucking christ learn to read
Yes deleted from the drop/craft/store system Now traders will ask 5 buds for a single soldier's stash.

I don't trust who they may call "the best". I should be the filter. I'm running for filter.
At least raccoons got a taste.. [t]http://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/1/16/Dr%27s_Dapper_Topper.png[/t] [t]http://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/2/27/Void_Monk_Hair.png[/t] [sp]It's the future of TF2[/sp] :v:

They'll remove everything, while keep adding new things. Eventually, the game will be nothing like TF2. The classes will be different, weapons will be different, hats will be different, storyline will be different, art style will be different. Then they will rename the game to Half Life 3. It's the perfect plan.
Now traders will ask 5 buds for a single soldier's stash.
I could ask for 5 buds for my Concheror. It doesn't mean that anyone will actually BUY it though.
I don't want to sound like another "raging kid", but i really think that TF2's empire's ending really soon. People said this when we got updates that didn't satisfy everyone or that felt rushed, i think it was wrong saying that, but now, today, by sending this post, they are going to remove 9 hats that made the history of tf2,and they're not even telling the exact reasons, hiding behind a "Saxton Hale post". What do we must think? Is it just for economical reasons? They are really removing those to boost their sales and make those hats worth more? And more important, what's next, will they remove other historic and iconic hats such as the Texas Ten Gallon,Tyrant's Helm and Bonk Helm? We all know that tf2 is a game based on an economy, we had stuff like a super-expensive ring, but this is honestly too much.
we've said that literally every update for the past 2 years
Like much of what Valve has done with TF2 this is just an experiment. Nothing more.
