I bought the pickledhobs from the store because it was one of the first hats I got in TF2, and even though I traded away the original long ago it was still a huge part of my TF2 experience. If they're retiring one of my favorite hats, damn right I'm gunna shell out a little extra for it if I don't already have it.

There's a simple explanation as to why the Vintages are increasing in price now.
Since the Unique variants are no longer going to be dropping, those Unique ones will no longer be a cheap and easy-to-acquire alternative for people who want the hat. Every version of these 9 hats are limited edition, prior to retirement only one of the qualities was limited.
Since all of them are to be limited, demand is increasing while supply remains the same. Which is reflected in the price hike that all variants have experienced, no matter how large.
Economy is dictated with supply and demand, not one without the other.
In time, demand for these hats will dwindle and it will grow difficult for common traders to sell them for exorbitant prices. However, they will retain great value to collectors, as they will have a high demand amongst them, just not a high demand throughout the community as a whole.

The thought process is closer to this:
There's a restricting going in place, I should increase my prices to get as much as possible during the panic buying period. People are buying for those prices, everyone else adjusts their standard to match.
When demand goes down, traders notice that it takes forever to liquidate some assets, so they discount things in order to sell. Which then drives other people to reflect those liquidations and the standard price drops.

Well, I can understand them. Because people who agree to buy items for high prices like this one, is like a commercial for highballers and traders who want to make some stuff on players, they know that some people will agree with that price and buy that item(s). I honestly remember one guy who agreed to buy a Towering Pillar of Hats for 3 keys (!). Naive and stupid traders and players is just a very good targert for highballers, so when someone buys an overpriced item, other traders understand that its a good way to make money and stuff, cause there will be always at least 1 person who will agree with that price.
