What.
They've never retired any Dota 2 items..
They did.
That Ursa set and the Void mace.
But both had a valid reason: Ursa set was ugly and unfitting and the mace was copyrighted.
It's like they're trying to drive the community away from TF2
this is the beginning of the end, gentlemen
They're removing purely cosmetic items from a multiplayer FPS.

They replaced the mace with something sexier too

It's sort of different, that's huge community backlash causing a retirement and legal issues respectively.
This is voluntary retirement causing community backlash.
I'm not really concerned with what this does to economy. I'm just disappointed that Valve is spending their time implementing ideas that are in no way interesting or fun.
I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm sad and worried at the thought of things leaving. Its scary and it also sets a bad precedent.
On the other hand, these are ancient hats. There's a billion of them floating around, many doomed to be crafting fodder. They're not exactly rare.
I'd say keep them avaliable as unusuals, at the very least.
"Hey guys, I'm running out of ideas how to make new interesting updates for TF2. I mean, adding hats all the time got a bit old by now."
"Hey, I know, let's remove hats!"
This is my guess how this idea came to existence.
"hey this is a neat robot Spy hat I got in MvM, I wonder if there's a non-robot version in the store?"
LOLNOPE
YOU CANNOT TAKE AWAY MY FUCKING SOLDIER'S STASH.
EDIT: Oh they will not delete them.
it begins

3:40 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: What's gained from this?
3:40 PM - ned_ballad: nothing
3:40 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: if anything it'll just cause some panic buying
3:40 PM - ned_ballad: which makes it so sad
3:40 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: and then nothing
3:40 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: no more revenue from those 9 hats
3:41 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: maybe they see the sales figures as pitiful and wanted to give it one last squeeze before they felt done with it
3:41 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: they have the numbers, not us
3:41 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: if they did this with community items
3:41 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: shit would hit the fan so hard
3:41 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: much harder than restricting community halloween items
3:42 PM - ned_ballad: fancy fedora has sold more than any other method of distribution combined
3:42 PM - ned_ballad: ...
3:42 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: has it faltered recently?
3:42 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: that's what I want to know
3:42 PM - ned_ballad: no idea, but I doubt it
3:42 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: I want to see some numbers so I have a better idea of why they're making decisions like these
3:43 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: Why retire the fedora? They just released a steel variant of it.
3:43 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: so they know that it's still relevant
I know they probably won't release sales figures, but dammit I want to see what numbers are backing these kinds of decisions.
I have 2 vintage fancy fedoras , one of them being level 99 and painted white.
I don't really want to know what the outcome of this is going to be.
ain't no drama like tf2 drama 'cause tf2 drama don't stop

Probably gonna get trade requests for them like crazy
Start stocking up on items from the Classless Update, they are next to go.
Get your bald hats while you can, they will be gone in the next purge.

I'm not saying that it's the same thing (it totally isn't) I'm just saying that they did retire items before.

Probably late
There are 103,604 Fancy Fedoras out there.
Obviously this means that you will never be able to acquire one under any circumstances.
Remember when they removed uncraftable items from the store and their prices rose to 200 ref each? Oh wait, that never happened.
I doubt this will change anything. You will still be able to get a Fancy Fedora for ~1.66, don't worry.
More Fancy Fedoras have been sold than any other method of distribution, combined, and it was only on sale a year and a half after being released
We have got to do something, I say we start a group or start a petition or something to end this fucking madness before the two weeks are up.

then what exactly is the point?
I should probably buy the batter's helmet. It is so nice.
Holy shit I just realized I have a vintage trophy belt.
remember to email Valve your concerns.
I have all but a few of those in vintage. Now I want them all.
Dammit Valve, you know how to get to me.

yeah but no one has ever wanted uncraftable items, true fact.
what's the point in doing this.
like i really don't understand, valve. want people to start buying the hats that everyone forgot about?
not everyone forgot about them, you know.
this is hella jacked up though, i don't understand.

I have, at the end of the day a hat is still a hat.
