do you think they might have screwed up and allowed these to be obtained from giftboxes?
An old hat is new to somebody.
Don't make classic hats trading fodder. Nobody likes trading.
I don't see what the problem is here

Q: What about older crates that have these items as a potential drop?
A: Crates that contain these items will still have a chance at unboxing them in normal quality only.
I knew that keeping some old crates will pay someday.
I know it's been mentioned a few times before, but this is definitely an idea from the economist to see if panic buying carries over to TF2 items. The problem is that they can't just go back on their word after removing them from the store, because that'll piss a lot of people off ("I spent my money for no reason? What the fuck, Valve!" as we saw with the craftable hats on the store incident).
This is really just a lose-lose situation they're intentionally creating to gather data. No other reason.
TF2 Team pulling the same garbage that the League of Legends team does. Removing old content just so people will fork over money before they go.
There's always the possibility that valve could turn around and start selling these again for a brief time, who knows.
then what exactly is the point?
Isn't it obvious? To test the waters. If you're seriously this upset about hats getting removed from the store and crafting, quit playing.

New item quality, just for previously retired items: Retro
Retro Demoman's Fro
There are 103,604 Fancy Fedoras out there.
Obviously this means that you will never be able to acquire one under any circumstances.
Remember when they removed uncraftable items from the store and their prices rose to 200 ref each? Oh wait, that never happened.
I doubt this will change anything. You will still be able to get a Fancy Fedora for ~1.66, don't worry.
Problem is, traders have shit for brain, they will overprice the first 9 hats.
Am I the only one who doesn't really care about this? I mean I'm not sure I see the point but other than that it doesn't really affect much.

is this an attitude to have when running a game that requires players to profit?
To "quit playing" as an answer.
The response to this has been overwhelmingly negative on every source of TF2 news I could find. Them deciding to burn their undo bridge seems incredibly foolish, they only stand to lose from this as it's an unneeded ripple in a stable market structure.
Or Unvintage/Antivintage
Great now my vintage texas tengallon is gonna get me hounded.

They tried overpricing uncraftables too.
It didn't work.
They might initially be "worth" 20 refined each but as demand falls back to its ordinary level, they'll be the same, maybe a scrap or two higher than before.

They simply can't please everybody. Tons of people have complained about every single thing that has ever been added to TF2. If Valve listened to all of their complaints... well, you wouldn't have a game to play.
Yeah, I think this is way fro Valve to see the reaction to the game and community and will define some sort of future movement in this area. I personally have all 9 hats, most unique uncraftables, so I'll calm my man tits and see what happens.
this concept of removing hats must have taken at least a full day to explain to Robin.
Well this is a horrible start to 2013.
GG Valve.
but i like all of these hats
why the fuck would you do this
I've never been upset with Valve before, so this is really jarring to me.
This is so unlike them.
Fire whole TF2 team, hire decent people or get DoTA 2 team to work on it sometimes.

I can't wait to get my hands on a Vintage Vintage Vintage Tyrolean.

It's an obnoxious attempt to reel in more money, it's a legitimate cash-grab tactic. It's not the fact they're removing items, it's the fact they're removing items that people would want to have accessible for future purchases just so they can cash-in on people's desperation to have them before they go forever(?)
League of Legends has done it for ages, and it's very obvious to even its most loyal players that it's a retarded cash-in tactic.
Personally I find the update kind of arbitrary and dumb, but I don't actually mind it. It's going to incentivize more people to wear the Soldier's Stash, Trophy Belt, Mining Light and Fancy Fedora, which will make the game marginally prettier and by extension me marginally happier. It will of course make the trading scene slightly more of a clusterfuck as well, but I honestly don't care.
I love how people are saying that this is because of 'that guy' wanting to 'stir shit up', you guys really can't anything in any way other than the worst
Now Im think about it, I kinda see the point of doing this:
They want to create a very valued items for more people so they can get better stuff.
But in the end of the day, this is gonna turn very annoying for people with small backpacks, if they want to help, the best thing they could do is make the old promo items craftable and dropable.

OH MY DEAR GOD A BUSINESS IS TRYING TO MAKE MONEY RUN TO THE HILLS
What exactly is the point of doing this?

I'm pretty sure that the extra money they make from this scheme will be like pocket change to them. If anything it'll stir up player to player trading since it's much cheaper than paying $5 per hat.

they can
not do this
nobody would be mad or happy.
