TF2 Blog: "The Second Annual Saxxy Awards Start in 10 Minutes!"

I'm none too impressed with it winning either, but I think everybody is targeting the wrong person. No offense (okay, maybe a little offense), but Max does strike me as an egotistical ass :v:. This mindset aside though, I think he is justified to retaliate to all this shit he's been getting from people. To put it blunt, it's Valve's fault that Max was favored and given such a high statistical chance at finals, giving others no chance.
In the previous year, the voting system was unbiased. You were given two videos that were chosen for you. You could not influence what you voted for at all. You picked the best of two. End of story. The amount of popularity behind the video was of irrelevance since it did not impact traffic to the video in voting.
THIS YEAR, however, was EXTREMELY different. This year, you were able to queue up videos, up to nine at a time. However, you were never obligated to vote for them (you could change up the queues). WORST OF ALL THOUGH, Valve made two extremely big mistakes. You could search videos and you could externally hyperlink to the vote page. This eliminated the random A vs. B contest, and turned the competition into little less than who could gauge the most traffic.
Preliminaries for the finals was nothing short of a trafficing contest (or popularity, be that it were). Max had a lot of subscribers, therefore his video was more easily broadcasted, and more well known to the general public who didn't want to take the time to go out and actually look at entries. Therefore, qualified for the category or not, he had a weighted chance to make finals if he linked his video in the description (Which there was nothing wrong with if he did--which I'm not claiming he did), or it could simply have been searched after his users watched the video.
Given this setup, it was only natural Max made finals in some category. It is Valve's fault for setting up the contest in such a fashion. Any big name could put out sub-par content (not claiming Wishmaker was, I'm speaking in generalities), and it would immediately make finals. In this incident, Max is nothing more than a result of Valve's poor decision making and contest setup. Max is a scapegoat for Valve here. Had the contest been setup like last year's voting, I bet that Wishmaker would not have made finals. Maybe top 10, but I don't think it'd been in the final four.
In any case, I know this doesn't apply to Valve's final four decisions that THEY made, but their decision pool was heavily affected by their idiotic setup beforehand.
Just my (lengthy) two cents. I'm as pissed off as the rest of you, but you're channeling your anger at the wrong person. I can't say I'm too fond of Max myself, but he isn't the culprit. Don't blame him. Blame Valve.
Maker of 'Sabotage' here, Max's Wishmaker video was really well done and I think him getting the award was well justified. There's no need to argue or get mad about it.
How much of a douchebag do you have to be to rate this dumb?
Max's video came up in my random queue and it was funny, so I voted it up. I knew nothing about Max or this controversy before reading this stupid thread. You're all blindly assuming that everyone who liked his video is somehow a biased fanboy and no normal person could have possibly enjoyed it. It seems to me that your opinion of Max biased your opinion of his video negatively just as much at is biased his fans positively.

Sabotage, Wishmaker and Practical Problems have around the same number of unique visits (~10k) so I really don't understand at all what you mean by "statistical advantage".
Also an interesting fact: my subscribers account for only 15% of the initial views (first 3 days). It has much less influence than you could think. People will spread content they like, regardless of whether they're subscribed.
"Statistical advantage" is a dubious claim at best, and laughable at worst. It's Valve who picks the winner among the most liked videos, there's a reason they asked for 2 weeks, they didn't just stop at the fourth one they've seen.
Ah come on guys, don't start a shitstorm over nothing. I actually liked wishmaker a lot more than sabotage; both were good, but I dunno. I felt like the pacing was off with Sabotage.
Either way though, there's no need to personally attack max just because "my favourite movie didn't win". He's done nothing wrong except make a video which was deemed better than all the others.

I'm confused as to why "I Dream of Electric Creeps"[h=1][/h]Doesn't have more views, it was really unique and well done.
All the other runner ups have 150k+ views, this has 6k

I'm not saying yours won by having advantages over them, but it made finals because of it (possibly along with them). I know Practical Problems is a reupload, whose first upload achieved over a million views on the first video. That is definitely influential and would certainly influence things, much like having a subscriber base would. And at that, I noticed the author behind Sabotage has a fair amount of subscribers himself.
And your statistic that only 15% made up your userbase doesn't surprise me. Still, that means that's 1500 viewers to start. And as you said, people share content they like. But if nobody is initially exposed to it, there is nobody to share it. And at that, not everybody WILL share the content. The larger base you have, the more likely people among them will share it, and of those, they will share it. It's like lighting a fire. If you use a match and have nothing on the wood to burn, it may catch and burn, catching everything else, or it may go out. Having a base of 1500 in the first three days is equivalent to having some kerosene on the wood. It's a solid foundation that makes it more likely to expand exponentially. There's a handful of videos I'm sure deserved to make finals, but didn't have that "initial kick" you had to allow them to shine. Some probably never even reached 1500 views altogether by the time it was said and done.
I just found Practical Problems to be an overall better video than Wishmaker. Wishmaker was predictable and was overall a bore fest. Practical Problems at least had some of the most unpredictable and funny moments, I have ever seen in a video
$10 says that fucking replay wins best overall
Well this thread turned into a shitstorm quite fast.
Congrats to max and all, personally I was hoping practical problems would have won, maybe he should have put it in action instead, or gotten better music since the new stuff sounds like shit.
And Max, do us a favor and try not to rub it in everyone's faces. Good 'ol Jimbo did that and he got de-modded and then got perma'd by Garry personally for being, and I quote, "the worst gold member ever"

Thanks, I hate it when people rub stuff in other people's faces.

I think anyone that has 2 Saxxies should gift one to me
I'd even pay for giftwrap and give you something extra as well
Winners undeserving or not, this was a really disappointing saxxys, the only category that had some really good entries was drama.
Maybe next time valve needs to make more of an event about it, spark up an update to go with it to the theme some how.
Congrats to max and all, personally I was hoping practical problems would have won
I was really rooting for practical problems too
I take it all the traders crawled out from their holes and voted on the high five replay because it had two max heads in it.
It's hard to feel happy for you Max because of some of the shit you've pulled as a mod

This entire event was very underwhelming, in my opinion. I find it sad that the most discussion generated during this was just more Max hate when so many wonderful videos were submitted. Whether or not they won, everything submitted and nominated was great. Oh well.
I'm surprised there weren't more creative entries in the Replay category.
I mean, I know that people this year were focused more on the SFM than that, but take a look at last year's entries.

I tried one with the editor and put a little uniqueness into it. It got an underwhelming result for not "being SFM", more or less.

Well, I mean, last year SFM didn't exist so creative entries had to be made through the replays. Now that SFM exists for those creative people, the replay category can be used for actual in-game events instead of short films.
That said, both turnouts were universally disappointing. Hopefully next year SFM will make its way in to the hands of enough talented people for there to be more competitors.
The animation on wishmaker was great, but how did it win over practical problems? Wishmaker wasn't funny, it was just silly while practical problems is one of the best made videos I've ever seen come out of SFM.

Remember when we thought they'd show Meet the Medic at the end of the Saxxies?
Doesn't feel like a year and a half ago, where has my time gone?
I would have tried to do something in the Replay category, but the fact that replays got only one category put me off.
I predict that either Bad Medicine or Wishmaker will get the overall award i'm affraid.
Plus the Replay category should be renamed to Popularity Contest if the winner is to be something thats painfully staged.
actually since its based on "likes", the entire thing is a popularity contest
if you whored your video out enough it could potentially get more "likes" than a video that was not whored out as much. even if you could cycle through videos, for example mine only got 1k views while other nominees here got upwards of 10k.
The way I see it, Wishmaker had a lot of potential to have some creative wishes, but instead has predictable twists in them, like the scout getting actual chicks instead of girls.

Issues with it being such a sudden category, I'd say. It was brought in late and needed you to upload via the ingame replay uploader which made it convoluted and less feasible to undergo any large editing tasks.
It was essentially a paltry catagory.
Looking at all the shit Max has to put up is quite sad: He can't do anything without someone bitching about it. It's even gotten WORSE now that he's a mod, but that's due to the controversy around him becoming a mod and his first steps as a mod.
People ragging about Max are like people ragging about Facepunch.
