I read the title, and all I could think about was Valve kicking us in the face with their energy legs.
This this this times 100.
OP is 100% correct and I can't help but feel that anyone who supports the drop system is, A: A Kiss-up who feel that valve can do no wrong. or B: Have had multiple hat drops. I'll assume B.

I just want Valve to release HL2:Episode 3....
And even now, I don't even have a single hat. Damn you drop system. :(
The thing I like about the drop system is that you can get items without grinding achievements or even playing the class. For example I have all the unlockables but haven't reached heavy milestone 3, sniper 3, or scout 1. Thanks drop system :) No hats yet, but who cares? (oh yeah, most of the community)
The sandman is fun for nonsrs play. especially on a map with infinite double jump and a death pit below.
The drop system is fucking stupid as shit for so many reasons. Why does it even exist in the first place, like what is the point. There is no point other than it can, which is ridiculous. Valve doesn't seem to care that it's so fucking mainstream.
I liked all the updates, except for the Heavy. That update still disappoints me, it was just an enormous gimmick.
and the Pyro update brought us the airblast, flaregun, and axtinguisher- things beloved by those who play the Pyro.
I'm pissed off at all the people that hate the backburner. Apart from that, good point, except for the drop system. I believe the drop system was good for weapons. Are you really good at the game? So then don't fucking bitch about it, you'll already get your weapons through the achievement milestones. Are you trying really hard at the game, but you can't get any of the achievements? Then don't cry, just keep playing. Something's bound to drop sometime. I got about 70% of my weapons as a drop before I could unlock them through the milestones. The hats then. WTF is up with that? Actually, nothing much. Hats are rare because they're just treats. You shouldn't bitch about it that you couldn't get them even if you're really good. If you're good, the way you show that off is by pwning the enemy team, right? Some say that it would be good to have really hard achievements to get hats; but then everybody would make achievement servers to get them.

And as we have learned from our ancestors? Style and finesse require a mentlegen to wear a hat! But how do we get hats? oh, only the god of random numbers can answer to that.
Valve always fixes and breaks stuff at the same time. Why break a tradition?
The problem I see with this, is that they seem to fix stuff that they recently broke(i'm thinking more of bugs and glitches). They never seem to fix bugs etc that has been ingame since launch.
The drop system is fucking stupid as shit for so many reasons. Why does it even exist in the first place, like what is the point. Which means they wouldn't be rare, defeating the whole purpose. And when has Valve not been mainstream? Pretty sure they weren't sitting around in their coffee house offices drinking exotic coffees and talking about macs and the fall of troy when Half-Life was getting award after award.
I stopped caring about the hats too much, but deep inside I still want that only one. What would really make me happy though is if they stopped making bugs, big or small, with Updates and then fixing them few days after release, in some cases weeks. I love that they are updating TF2. But I just wish this little thing. I guess I should be happy they fix them pretty soon.
They realized the drop system wasn't good, but is the achievement system so much better? It's the lesser of two evils.
Tactical advantages of a hat: 1. Covers the head making it a bit more (however small) difficult for Snipers to get the headshot. 2. Spy-disguises do not emulate the hat your disguise-victim wears. 3. Are unlocks still tied to achievements? I thought it got separated. In Battlefield 2, they disallowed unlocks in competitive-play because it was similar in that not everyone was on a level playing field for unlocks.
1. Not really. Your head is still as big as it was. 2. They do, IIRC. 3. Yes.
If the drop system wasn't in place for the hats they'd be presumably tied to achievements. Which means they wouldn't be rare, defeating the whole purpose.
Again, what's the the big deal with the hats having to rare? An achievements based system would allow everyone to get the hats Instead of just a lucky few as decided by random numbers, and you can't tell me there is any problem with that. inb4 "OMG then you'd see the hats everywhere!" Right now, most everyone is using the Halo and/or Gibus. Making the other hats easy to get would make so you don't see a bunch of one hat running around. Isn't that a good thing? [editline]10:21AM[/editline]
I'm C I've picked up every item I want and don't care about hats
Kinda falls into B there. The Thing gave you every item you want, so ofcourse you like it.
Wow, Op, you actually impressed me. You made a lot of sense. The only problem that I had with your ideas is that, when Valve takes their time, they really take their time. Although, some people hate Valve BECAUSE they take their time, even when the game is immensely awesome. Poor Valve, always between a rock and a hard place...

I like the drop system so people don't cheat with achievements and get the weapons.
I like the drop system so people don't cheat with achievements and get the weapons.
yet, that doesnt affect you at all
Tactical advantages of a hat: 1. Covers the head making it a bit more (however small) difficult for Snipers to get the headshot.
The hat does affect bullets hitting your head. That's done through hitbox detection, and the hats don't affect them at all.
2. Spy-disguises do not emulate the hat your disguise-victim wears.
That's one small effect that I'm doubting. can't check, my gaming pc is busted now)
3. Are unlocks still tied to achievements? I thought it got separated. In Battlefield 2, they disallowed unlocks in competitive-play because it was similar in that not everyone was on a level playing field for unlocks. (You got to unlock a new one after you attained the next rank which required points and the global-points-requirement grew geometrically.)
Hats won't have any effect at comp playing. As they don't give any boosts. But they already lock some weapons in several comp tournaments.
Hats aren't emulated by Spies. That's the single thing that I dislike. If Valve let Spies copy hats then there would be 1% less Spy checking.
Yeah, I emailed Valve because of that. Spies do not display hats, just few days ago I found Spy because his disguise victim had the Engineer's cap and he didn't.
Yup. It oughta be done.
Yeah, I emailed Valve because of that. Spies do not display hats, just few days ago I found Spy because his disguise victim had the Engineer's cap and he didn't.
Actually the exact same thing happened to me a few days ago. Had he had the hat, and not have been less than 2 steps from the guy he was disguised as, I would've ignored him and we probably would've lost that game. Well, lost the game earlier anyway.
