So, I've been a lurker for a while, but I felt inclined to post about this because I haven't seen much speculation on it.
Following both the speculation thread and [URL="http://www.reddit.com/r/truetf2/comments/y6kc1/yao_rtruetf2_i_playtested_mvm_ama/"]this[/URL] AMA on Reddit, I've pieced together some of my own speculation about the backstory for MvM.
It's been pointed out that in the video, there are no Engie robots. If it were any other class, I'd chalk it up to coincidence, but not Engie. Since I heard about MvM I've always had a feeling that this would be a big Engie-centric update to make up for how often he's left out.
First, we see, as very often pointed out, that there are robot heads in the Engie update teaser trailer. This confirmed MvM has been in the works for upwards of two years. Old news. Now, suppose that because MvM has been a work in progress for so long, that's why Engie is left out of many of the updates following his initial update; because this one centers around him.
Some other stuff we know is that there was a [URL="http://i.imgur.com/uhfB5.png"]robot Scout drawing[/URL] (along side a mechanical hat schematic; probably coincidence but I still think it's neat) on the Engie update page. This along with [URL="http://tf2.gamefan.cz/obrazky/tf2-mann-vs-machine.jpg"]this[/URL] [URL="http://pikigeek.com/files/2012/06/YdjZE.jpg"]other[/URL] [URL="http://pikigeek.com/files/2012/06/YdjZE.jpg"][/URL] [URL="http://images1.pcgamesn.com/tf2.feat_mann2_0.jpg"]evidence[/URL] brought us to where we are today.
What I'd like to add are some thoughts I've had regarding Engie's role in all of this. Let's look back at the [URL="http://www.teamfortress.com/loosecanon/"]Engie comic[/URL]. At the end we see a very sly Engineer with his grandfather's file labeled "GUNS, Maps of Australium Caches." What I was curious about is what do guns and the locations of Australium have so in common that they are lumped into the same file? I'd assumed until recently that the file contained blueprints for the new stuff released in Engie's update, (so canonically, that's how he got new stuff; He built it using those files.)
But suppose the files contained more! What if Radigan had begun creating blueprints for "robots" along with the life machines for Redmond and Blutarch? I know, robots in the 1800's is a long shot, but with access to that much Australium and a mind as great as his, I think, canonically, it could definitely be conceivable that he would have come up with something like that, considering he'd also made sentries and such.
I think it would make sense if Dell found these blueprints and he was building robots in the Engie update teaser, not new weapons. Then perhaps something went wrong and the robots or the blueprints for the robots (more likely) made it into Gray's hands. Perhaps then that the items/weapons/etc given to Engie in this update are designed to directly counter robots (as his own canonical attempt at reversing what he started.)
All else aside, if there are Engie robots, I doubt they would behave like our standard Engies. I think they'd be gunslinger Engies (Engie's arm IS robotic, after all).
Anyways, those are just my thoughts on the story side of things. I'm not much for one on speculating about weapons or maps or anything. So this is what I'm inputting instead. Thoughts and ideas?
