We get both.
But if your item is in a crate [halloween crate. summer/winter crate] you get given a key too as you helped "create" the crate. you also get a %'s on the unboxes that were your item.

I think it's so that the item contributors get some of the revenues for the keys sold, with the side-effect of giving them a self-made key.

Self-Made Keys are given to people who have their items in the special crates. When they're distributed, they reflect the crate ie Self-Made Scorched Key or Self-Made Nice Key. Once all of the keys are reverted to normal keys, so do the Self-Made ones.
They presumably do not give out community weapons anymore because they'd rather give out a more specific reward to community contributors. Such is the case with the Wiki Cap being for Wiki editors.

They don't. Self Made Key were given out to players who made them. It's a long story I'll explain it when I'm not on a tablet.

If I recall, the only SM keys that were given were for community items that were in crates when they were released aka Nice crates and Scorched crates. If a contributor's item got unboxed, they'd get a cut of the key money.
