Just know that if you play Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal, you can't transfer your Pokémon to any of the newer games.

All 4 I enjoyed a lot. Just start with any 1st gen game/remake though. There isn't really a based story-line that continues, but it's more of a series. You can start whereever, but I like seeing the progression of new Pokemon.

New pokemons are nice and all, but getting restricted to them is less.
