I'd say put your hand like his would be and try to replicate that. Look at how your fingers sit, your wrist bends, etc. Maybe even get a picture of it and work from there.

You do know that almost 20 years after the first game was released, Doom still has an enormous fanbase with entire game mods still being made from it. I heavily doubt, as you put it, nobody cares about it. Especially considering Doom is one of Gabes favorite games.
