Means they cannot buy you something doesn't mean they care any less about you. There are probably circumstances preventing them from buying you anything. I should know. I've had to deal with similar situations before. For instance, I knew a guy who anytime I asked him to play something, he never said yes. Eventually, I got really mad at him and started arguing with him, admittedly. Then he explained his motivations behind all his actions to me, and it all made sense. Everything had a perfectly logical reason, and I'm sure this is the case for your friends as well.
