I'm no good at organic stuff and folds. How would you go about doing it? I only resort to stuff like this when I have absolutely no clue where to begin.
Mostly though I'm just trying to learn more modifiers and functions. For instance, I haven't once used key frames until now and I've had 3ds for a year.

Make the cloth less rigid, and it should fall down like you want it too.(call rigidity in maya, i have no idea what its called in max tho)

Oh, no, I didn't have to make it as like a wrap-around cover, just sort of as an illustration of the basic idea behind the book.

It's kind of weird that a Samurai would even have a shield, considering that, according to the bushido code, war is a form of 1-on-1 art and the fact that most Samurai were actually more skilled in horse-back archery.
