Legally no, because the student license does not allow you to sell your models. If it were to get in then it will be put in the shop and sold, so you would be breaking the license.
Realistically, there is no way that they will find out that you used a student copy, so you'll be fine.

also i've had a problem with team colours. It seems that the model material overrides the texture groups in the QC every time, despite the fact that HLMV loads both VMT's and accepts that there's two skins, but switching between them always leaves the model with the first skin, which is just the one referenced in the blender material

Evenin' all, Brit here. I do Trilby's texture and art work (like that wrench concept art above). I'm not that experienced in TF2 texturing, although I am learning more about the artstyle with each thing I paint. I do all my stuff by hand, with my iTrust widescreen tablet and a hot mug of tea :v:
I may not post all that much, but since Trilby and I are collaborating as a team I figured I'd poke my head in and say hello. Cheers!

The problem is that your qc does not tell the engine where to look for the texture files, try this

If it still isnt working, try exporting the smd with "demo_flask.tga" (without quotes of course) as the material, I dont think it is wise to make it use a file path
*edit* Apparently I was beaten to the punch, but you should still remove the $hbox lines, the $collisionmodel line, the $cd line, and change the $sequence line to what i posted
Tribly, try unloading weapon. I know you don't have one loaded, but that will sometimes cause it not to change colors.
