Very WIP of my first model. I'm trying to do a one barrel slug shotgun for scout. Most of it looks shit.

The way the eyes and filter connect to the rest of the wool doesn't make sense to me
pretty sure the eyes and filter parts are meant to be knitted on like sleeves on a shirt

But its le funi cos worsho komentors obv talk like dis xD
is it a hat or misc?
It looks more like a misc, so you might want to see if it clips with anything really badly.

You're way better at doing models than me (Anyone is better than me). So chances are you're gonna finish it first.
Perhaps we can release our items as a collection of one-barrel shotguns?

How does it look with the Stately Steel Toe?
Now I can wear a boot and a sock on my head!
EDIT:

clips like crazy
May I present to you, the Christmas Carol. (bad puns, hooray.)

Anyone wanna model this? (if it hasn't already been done; I checked the workshop and couldn't find anything similar so yeah.)
I screwed up on the front view, I guess. The other two should make clear what I had in mind, though. Also implied three styles I had in mind, one without any stripes, one with three small ones near the edge and a style with a big stripe and a small one on top. Thinking these might be added like the Oldest school style of the tossle cap(with the stripe being a tad darker than the painted color)
Does Valve accept custom animations with weapons?
Does Valve accept custom animations with weapons?
Well, they accepted RoBro's animations, but weapon animations have never been accepted before, so don't count on it.
Well, they accepted RoBro's animations, but weapon animations have never been accepted before, so don't count on it.
In that case, I'll have to make a release hatch for my model.
I was thinking of creating an animation where the barrel was opened manually instead.
I came home and saw 120 new posts.
at least 80 of those were the usual drama, why did I even get excited...
Concept:
The Seasoned Veteran

Its intended to be a shotgun/blunderbuss crossed with a meat grinder, complete with a a few seasonings (salt, pepper and rosemary), and its intended to load either cocktail or vienna sausages as the shells.
The idea was for it to be a Thanksgiving styled item considering how popular it is to cook for Thanksgiving. It also goes well with the Kitchen Warrior loadout. (Stainless Pot, Captains Cocktails, and the Frying pan)
Size comparison to the soldier:

can someone link me to a good tutorial on how to get things paintable, I'm trying to copy already made items to see how they do it, but I don't understand why it's not working

You messing with the alpha channel?

Create new alpha mask for the paintable part -> >Create a new layer, select the brightest tone color the paintable part has and fill the new layer with that color. After that, set the layer as Divide bake mode (You should get a white-ish tone on the paintable part) . Export as .tga with a 32 compression and keep alpha mask. Import to VTF Edit with DXT5 options and save the texture.
On your material file (.vmt), here follows an example of what it should look like and what fields you should have and edit to be paintable:
"VertexlitGeneric"
{
"$baseTexture" "models\player\items\heavy/capones_capper"
// "$bumpmap" "models\effects\flat_normal"
"$detail" "effects/tiledfire/fireLayeredSlowTiled512.vtf"
"$detailscale" "5"
"$detailblendfactor" .01
"$detailblendmode" 6
"$yellow" "0"
"$basemapalphaphongmask" 1
"$phong" "1"
"$phongexponent" "5`"
"$phongboost" "0.1"
"$lightwarptexture" "models/player/pyro/pyro_lightwarp"
"$phongfresnelranges" "[.25 .5 20]"
"$blendtintbybasealpha" "1"
"$blendtintcoloroverbase" "0"
"$colortint_base" "{255 255 255}" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------> place RGB value of the brightest color you picked in the divide layer inside the {}
"$color2" "{255 255 255}" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------> place the value above to see the default color on sdk or the item painted with other colors (values of ingame paints findable in the wiki)
"$colortint_tmp" "[0 0 0]"
// Rim lighting parameters
"$rimlight" "1" // To enable rim lighting (requires phong)
"$rimlightexponent" "6" // Exponent for phong component of rim lighting
"$rimlightboost" "0.5" // Boost for ambient cube component of rim lighting
// Cloaking
"$cloakPassEnabled" "1"
(...)
}
}

i'll never model, so you got me beat there, at least
i do what i am good at, and that's texturing and concept art
now: time for a story
When I was really young, I was still incredibly into video games and designing them and drawing stuff for them and all that. At this time of youth, I was a huge fan of Insomniac Games. This was before I even knew of anything Valve has done. I had this huge idea. I'll draw a bunch of shit and pitch it to Insomniac. They'll love it, right? I'm not even a teenager at this point - of course they'll hire me!
Yeah, that's how I thought things would happen for some reason. This must've been at least 8 years ago.
So I did it. I drew all this stuff. I drew characters. Heroes. Villains. Weapons. I designed a game. I was so excited to send it to Insomniac. I sent it via snail mail because I didn't know what I was doing.
A few weeks later I got a response. Cookie-cutter response.
More or less it was "our lawyers won't even let a look at it." Sure, it wasn't what I wanted, but it was still a response from a company that I praised at the time. So I hung it up. I kept it. I was proud of it even though it meant literally nothing. The next few years I just kept doing what I was doing. I didn't send anymore to Insomniac, of course, that didn't matter anymore. But I kept on working. I kept on designing stuff. I kept drawing stuff.
And back in 2010, something finally came of all that. Six years or so after getting that letter from Insomniac, Valve purchased Coldfront, which I made content for, and my name is listed whenever you load up the map. Even then, I didn't stop. Nothing before that stopped me, why would this? Eventually Valve bought The Swamp Theme, then The Head Warmer, and now The Plutonidome and The Scarecrow.
What is my message to all you guys? Valve is a great company, and no matter what, don't stop what you're doing. Keep making stuff. Don't stop. It works eventually. It may take some time. In my case, over half a decade. But just keep working on your stuff and it will work out in the end.
Yeah.
[sub]oh christ i just wrote that all on my phone[/sub]

That's actually a really inspiring story. Thanks for that.
Went with a blank rectangle as all the symbols looked like crap at 512x512.
Also, team colors.

Fund it
Because I know the artstyle. Just because I can't model myself, doesn't mean when I can't tell when something is badly modeled or textured. Just because I can't model doesn't mean I can't tell when an item will conflict with a lot of other items. Just because I can't model doesn't mean I can't recognize the stereotypes of the characters the models are created for and know if they fit them well or not.
I'm not so sure about that, actually.
