Don't use opacity on your brush, setting the flow lower or later adjusting the opacity of the layer gives much better results.
+1 to what Bap says as big strokes tend to look better.
Personally I prefer hats to not be purposefully over his eyes. It looks right with the stock and some others, but when it's just forced for the sake of 'this is how his hats should be' it looks weird.
I actually wear the speks/pyrovision with some hats specifically so it looks like he has eyes
