aw :( [editline]26th September 2012[/editline] its true [editline]26th September 2012[/editline]
i didnt read his paragraph, but if its valid critique you should take it into consideration, not blow it off.
just read it, he's 100% right.
The blockyness (rounded corners excused) combined with the color scheme reminded me of something :v:
That's why I stopped making the 2D ones, stuff like that would be much better but it's way beyond my level
The handle reminds me of the medigun's. Now I'm imagining rapidfire heals.
Well it is supposed to be a mini-gun based off the medi-gun. although it looks more like the mini-gun had sex with the medi-gun and the result of that had sex with a black box.
[t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40395733/minigun.png[/t]
how's the barrel gonna spin or does it just not spin? looks like the square pieces are too close for it to move at all
how's the barrel gonna spin or does it just not spin? looks like the square pieces are too close for it to move at all
I think he's going for the Tomislav like mechanism or atleast, that's the mechanism this gun is based off of.
I make square, unsafe products for men! Not white little egg things with no sharp edges and only one button! Look at this tiny thing! It's not on fire! They'll liquidate your assets and turn it into a fruit smoothie!
i didnt read his paragraph, but if its valid critique you should take it into consideration, not blow it off.
There's a difference between replying and blowing things off. By analyzing my instinctive reactions and putting them into words, I am forced to think about which parts of his criticism boils down to subjective values, which parts apply to things I can change, which parts apply to things I can't change, et cetera. I think the result is a much better consideration than just reading it and thinking 'oh well I guess I suck' would be. The question is whether the resulting reply is relevant enough to be posted in this thread, relevant enough to be sent to him as a PM, or if I should just nod quetly afterwards and close the tab. Dingus.
Okay then. I should point out that I shall aim to be objective as possible, given that I shall merely present this as the truth as I see it. Naturally, people will disagree with me, but this is a forum and opinions come with a user base of this scale. I'd imagine you'd be the first. To begin, your concepts are on the wrong side of generic. A lot of them can or have been done by other people. Flat caps are abundant as a TF2 mod for use, and knowing you wish for your item to be in game, what does your one bring to the game that it's features do not accommodate at present? A Baker Boy painted in After Eight serves as a good equivalent for your latest one. There are also plenty of flat caps in the workshop, and you have drawn several for various classes, regardless of whether or not they suit the personality of the class. As well as that, many of your ideas can be pitched in a few words. "A brick", "A gold snub nosed revolver", "a silver fork". We all know what a brick looks like, so who needs you to draw one? You should focus that energy on ideas that can be attributed to you, ideas that nobody else can think of. Make that brick one that nobody else would have thought of drawing. In addition, you ideas can contradict common sense. The Medic backpack you drew, when people told you not to make a cosmetic backpack due to the rightly held belief that cosmetics must not interfere with readability. Valve might break these rules, but we should care and abide by them, especially when readability on such a level like TF2's is a selling point that few other FPS games can claim to have. You then followed this up by complaining about how some cosmetics interfere with readability in the game, such as the Anger with the Dashin' Hashshashin. Be consistent in your regard for the rules, because in that instance it made you look like a hypocrite in my eyes. Why should I trust you to design for me when you argue against hooded hats, opting to disregard distribution of colour, shape from the neck down, distinct voice acting and audio cues, and meta concepts like the extreme difference in how Spy and Snipers function in the game, and yet allow you to design a cosmetic backpack because "Valve does it", and not taking advantage of the potential for a new Medigun to suit it. The back is a large area for readability that should be exploited more, and it infuriated me that you did not use that potential. I also wonder if you've actually played the game and have gleaned what it's actually like in terms of atmosphere. Few of your designs suit the character's personalities or the environments they are in, and probably reflect more your tastes in entertainment sources like literature and film. While author appeal is a trope that can lead to some great designs, it can also be a detriment if you're influenced by it too much and it doesn't seam successfully with additions to an existing franchise. I'm persuaded to the latter when it concerns you, given that you design many fanciful hats that do not look like they will be worn by most of the cast un-ironically. I do concede that once in a while, you strike gold, and I think that is a rare moment of you displaying an understanding how the game's universe works, at least compared to the other designs you have made.
nothing wrong with drawing pictures of simple things, catches much more attention and gives a better sense of the way he wants it. I have a bad tendency to go into modeling without really looking at references and then I fuck something up bad. I mean, sure, a brick's a brick, but he was already drawing a set, you expect him to just write "also a brick but I won't draw it"? Hell, even with a concept image, we just saw how hard of a time skunk had deciding how exactly to make the brick The scout flatcap is a bad argument since it's class restricted. Generic being bad is a bad argument, the main problem with TF2 is items have dumb extra stuff that ruins them. The summer shades are a slightly garish color by default, them becoming paintable really redeemed them. The Professor's Specs has that stupid paper clip, meaning it can't be used for anything besides being a nerd. There are multiple top hats, but they all have stupid shit like hobo rips, and rockets. We NEED generic stuff. Frankly I don't think you can condemn classy dress as unfitting. I mean, have YOU played this game lately? At least classy hats are something people might actually wear, regardless of their personality. And actually I'm not a fan of the counterfeit billycock, too silly for my taste. But I'll agree on the medic backpack

wow now you're remodeling it wow spark just fucking wow
Ok. Care to elaborate?
You added a gallon of verbose to your last post, that kind of does it.
You ask and you will recieve. would like to point out, I did forget that his latest concept with the flatcap was the scout. can't remember if it looked significantly different than the baker boy so just disregard that part for now edit: why would you disagree with me refuting one of my own arguments :v:
Ok. Care to elaborate?
read what you just said. does that seem at all like anything someone who just got some heavy criticism would do? maybe you should take what hes saying into consideration, and reevaluate your art.

Mind showing me how you model electric tape? Maybe it's a good thing I don't know I guess, some earlier emporiums some people were complaining about the overusage of electrical tape. I hate how unsatisfied I usually am of my own work.
Mind showing me how you model electric tape? Maybe it's a good thing I don't know I guess, some earlier emporiums some people were complaining about the overusage of electrical tape. I hate how unsatisfied I usually am of my own work.
i didnt model that, but from what i see, the valve artist just cut out a section of cylinder, added thickness and stretched it out.
You added a gallon of verbose to your last post, that kind of does it.
Ah, you're talking solely about the use of language, that's comforting. Yeah, I'm verbose as fuck, but it's not because I think it makes me look intelligent. It's partly a hipstery self-ironical facade thing used to mask my very genuine lack of confidence in aspects of the English language (I'm Swedish, as you may or may not know). I also have a less intentional habit of trying to be as unambiguous as possible, which often causes me to use specific and pretentious-sounding words. I'm not particularly proud of either reason.
read what you just said. does that seem at all like anything someone who just got some heavy criticism would do? maybe you should take what hes saying into consideration, and reevaluate your art.
Of course, but I think examining my reasons for doing what I do and how the criticism applies to that is a pretty vital first step to any constructive reevaluation.
wow now you're remodeling it wow spark just fucking wow
Well it did look more like a "mini-gun had sex with the medi-gun and the result of that had sex with a black box." when it was supposed to be a mini-gun based off the medi-gun.
Sparkwire didn't remodel it out of the blue. He asked if he could try the medigun barrel, and I allowed him too do so. I also agreed with him that the medigun barrel looked better on the gun. He/she also suggested that i should add straps too the shotgun, I added some straps and some additional detailing so that the straps wouldn't look so out of place. But i still think that the plain look fits the gun pretty well too, so I would like your opinion.
That middle part looks rather flimsy and unfitting now. You've got this big bulk as barrel, a smaller box in the middle and then a big box with handle essentially. Maybe remove that part and lenghten it?

Daaamn the entire Ghostbusters set is in the top five on the Workshop. Nnnnggghhh~~~
