In the topic of disgusting halloween items, I gotta admit NeoDement's BLU Heart Breaker takes the cake. No offense, but it's sickening to look at, for me at least.
ItemToast Beta 1
What is it!?
Easly recompile and repack models and materials for skins releases.
Select your QC to recompile a model as any other items in TF2 and itemtoast automatically repacks models recplaments into a folder.
So its like Hatzilla?
-Pretty much, except it downloads the tf2 item schema and icons, so you always have thelatest items to recompile as.
You can easly select the items from the item icon list.
It will recompile models but also copy the materials too, itemtoast analyzes the QC to grab the "cdmaterials", the SMD files to look for used materials and will automatically copy the used materials no need to worry about copying materials either.
-Button and option to automatically or manually delete the models replacements in the /tf/ directory.
Okay then.
I should point out that I shall aim to be objective as possible, given that I shall merely present this as the truth as I see it. Naturally, people will disagree with me, but this is a forum and opinions come with a user base of this scale. I'd imagine you'd be the first.
To begin, your concepts are on the wrong side of generic. A lot of them can or have been done by other people. Flat caps are abundant as a TF2 mod for use, and knowing you wish for your item to be in game, what does your one bring to the game that it's features do not accommodate at present? A Baker Boy painted in After Eight serves as a good equivalent for your latest one. There are also plenty of flat caps in the workshop, and you have drawn several for various classes, regardless of whether or not they suit the personality of the class. As well as that, many of your ideas can be pitched in a few words. "A brick", "A gold snub nosed revolver", "a silver fork". We all know what a brick looks like, so who needs you to draw one? You should focus that energy on ideas that can be attributed to you, ideas that nobody else can think of. Make that brick one that nobody else would have thought of drawing.
In addition, you ideas can contradict common sense. The Medic backpack you drew, when people told you not to make a cosmetic backpack due to the rightly held belief that cosmetics must not interfere with readability. Valve might break these rules, but we should care and abide by them, especially when readability on such a level like TF2's is a selling point that few other FPS games can claim to have. You then followed this up by complaining about how some cosmetics interfere with readability in the game, such as the Anger with the Dashin' Hashshashin. Be consistent in your regard for the rules, because in that instance it made you look like a hypocrite in my eyes. Why should I trust you to design for me when you argue against hooded hats, opting to disregard distribution of colour, shape from the neck down, distinct voice acting and audio cues, and meta concepts like the extreme difference in how Spy and Snipers function in the game, and yet allow you to design a cosmetic backpack because "Valve does it", and not taking advantage of the potential for a new Medigun to suit it. The back is a large area for readability that should be exploited more, and it infuriated me that you did not use that potential.
I also wonder if you've actually played the game and have gleaned what it's actually like in terms of atmosphere. Few of your designs suit the character's personalities or the environments they are in, and probably reflect more your tastes in entertainment sources like literature and film. While author appeal is a trope that can lead to some great designs, it can also be a detriment if you're influenced by it too much and it doesn't seam successfully with additions to an existing franchise. I'm persuaded to the latter when it concerns you, given that you design many fanciful hats that do not look like they will be worn by most of the cast un-ironically. I do concede that once in a while, you strike gold, and I think that is a rare moment of you displaying an understanding how the game's universe works, at least compared to the other designs you have made.
So I decided I'm going to reply to this anyway, and even post the reply publicly. Skip to the end if you want to understand why.
I think the points made in the first paragraph boil down to subjective values. In my opinion, generic-ness is versatile and therefore a good thing, and gimmicks for the sake gimmickry make the items they're applied to worse. I'd like the Gibus, Full Head of Steam, Munitionne and in fact also the Counterfeit Billycock better if they had plain uncluttered top hat styles.
I also believe in nuance over breadth when it comes to variation, to an extent that I'm aware that most don't. A big part of the TF2 community thinks the Spy has way too many fedoras/trilbies, but I think every single one of them fills an unique appearance niche and is thereby justified. The Fancy Fedora says 'I'm stylish yet modest', the Cosa Nostra Cap says 'I'm stylish and want you to know it', the Détective Noir says 'I'm a here to do my job and I'm great at it, stay out of my way', and the Hat of Cards just silently raises a seductive eyebrow. Similarly, I think the Baker Boy - regardless of paint - says 'I'm an enterprising young lad who stays optimistic despite the hardships of poverty' whereas the angle and shape of the cap I drew rather says 'I have abusive parents and hate the world, let's go beat up old ladies', making the latter justified despite the existence of the former. I can say with confidence that I've never posted a sketch while being aware of the existence of an item already filling (in my opinion) its appearance niche. I have done it accidentally (probably several times, but that's the only example I can think of right now), and retired my sketch upon learning my mistake.
Finally, I agree that the basic idea behind a lot of my concepts can be conveyed with words. But frankly, what's more informative and interesting to look at? A drawing of a golden snubnosed revolver with an engraved wooden handle and a pocket watch chain attached to the bottom of it, or that written sentence?
So yeah, those are my subjective opinions. You may and will rate me dumb for them, but I stand by them.
As for the second paragraph.. I find the arguments I made in those cases severely misrepresented in your post, but that's boring and irrelevant and I can't deny that I can behave hypocritically, so ok.
The final paragraph is the problematic part. If so many of you find my concepts unfitting, I'm obviously doing something wrong. The thing is, I always try to evaluate whether my ideas are fitting, and never draw them if I reach the conclusion that they aren't. The problem is therefore not a lack of judgment but rather the quality of it. And if I can't trust my judgment on the issue, I really have no method through which to improve. If a painter is colorblind and thinks all his paints are green, telling him to use less red won't do anything.
I could technically start being more critical and skip the ideas I feel even slightly unsure about, but in my experience my opinions on my concepts tend to be very different from the emporium's; The ideas I'm proud of usually get significantly worse response than the ideas I feel kind of lukewarm about, so there's a big risk I'd just be left with the stuff you consider bad.
Therefore, I can only really see two options: Either I keep going the same way as before and seem like a self-sufficient douche, or I quit posting spontaneous concept sketches completely and seem like a sulky kid who can't take criticism. Neither option is particularly dignified, but the prospect of knowing that a dozen people will think 'what a twat' every time I post a new sketch makes the latter option more appealing.
So.. Um, yeah. I guess I'll do that. It was fun while it lasted.
who cares if a couple people think you're a twat, draw more. >:L
in fact, I think I'll finish up those two concepts of yours I've been forgetting now because they're awesome and you're awesome
concept stage should for all intents and purposes be considered brainstorming at this point, and there are no bad brainstorms.
Lot's of letters and words
I wanted to stay out of this but I just couldn't hold it anymore.
I think that the main thing people have against you is the fact that you wave your concepts around at unappropriate times. It basically comes down to that if someone makes an item that is slightly overlapping with one of your huge pile of concepts, you try and forcechoke some credit out of it.
Don't do stuff like that. It doesn't make your position any better.
The same goes for posting concept arts that are already taken, you seem to have the need to post them, and specifically stating that they are oh so taken. That just seems like you want to wave your e-penis around on the board. Just post WIP images, not the taken concept arts.
Content wise I'm going to pass by, everyone should do what they want if they enjoy it.
So in the end I think nobody really minds that you post your concept art, as I often look at other people's ideas to get some going on my own, but it's really the way you present it. (this includes the stuff I said above, and your constant reposting of concept art)
I'd like to chime in on this if i may. i think its a good idea to post concepts regardless whether its done already or not. Ideas are like that. They pop out from out of the blue. For that reason, i'm ok with him posting ideas. If it were a different person with much more clout, would we have the same argument right now? I sure hope so but probably not. I believe in people that have the natural talent but i also admire people who work hard. Granted that Deodorant has less talent than many people by any artistic standard, i still support that notion of him posting his concepts here simply because i can see the effort being put forth on the ideas, via the art side and the description side of the item. The effort is there regardless of the attitude he/she might have.
Of course i see also the valid points that many of the ideas does not fit the themes and premises, i do see progress compared to the previous attempts. What i do see is that at times the comments that deodorant posts that accompany the concepts tend to overshadow the ideas. I think that is whats creating the negativity.

This was cool to test in alpha stage, everybody download it - it's awesome.
Let me point out that when Deo did the texture for the as yet unreleased Engineer spanner I made (stupid animations ruin everything) the discussion of Valve money came up and how it would be split. When I said it would be a straight 50/50, he baulked. He didn't think it was fair for him to make an edit of my existing graphics and get just as much as I made doing most of the work. To be honest I don't think he's in it for the money. Just the credit.
And yes Deo, you're doing more texture work for me in the future. You're going to texture this brick and like it.

Quick question, Hatzilla will leave any extra hats you compiled for in your tf folder. So lets say I compile a hat to replace 6 hats and have it pack them. Does item toast do anything about the compiled versions still in the game files or leave them in like hatzilla does?

Oh I forgot to mention, you have a button to delete the recompiled models on the "compile log" tab and a checkbox on the settings tab to automatically delete those after compiling.
Another thing, there is a text file "banned_items.txt" that has a list of words so it doesn't load certain items in the icon list, it will check the model names and item names, if it contains a word from the "banned_items.txt" it will not load said item.
This is useful to ignore v_models, w_models, robot weapon models, some promo items which appear twice in the item schema (genuines I believe) and all that sort of things, those specific models which obviously wouldn't be possible to recompile by just recompiling as a different names.

I wish I could make some fucking nice things that I've seen on here such as that clown set for pyro and that watch thing for medic and all the other epic shit.
So I created yet another style based on what Sparkwire had suggested (Healing/Hurting) and I'm putting it to a vote so I can get a final consensus and know which one to focus on and leave the possibility of other watch faces as styles in future.

or
"A medic never pops uber too early or too late, he ubers precisely when he means to."
But the name that will get in the game for sure is actually:

Once a bandwagon starts on the Workshop nothing can stop it.
Nobody votes for generic items though
You know, I'd like to see more weapons shared between classes, like maybe a pistol that works for both engi and scout, or a melee that works for both engi and medic ect.
