The more I hear about Max (and people making fun of him) the more he seems like a genius artist, like Beethoven or Leonardo da Vinci and such. I think the War Pig looks fine unpainted, but if you want to paint it, I'd recommend After Eight or Team Spirit. After Eight does do a good job echoing the color of his boots, it gives a nice dark without being too black, gives it a definite military feel. Team Spirit of course matches his coat, and is brighter and more noticeable while still working with Soldier's color scheme.

Compared to the Bowtie, I think it's much better, Has a better texture imo and I like the way the collar is mode;ed with the tie itself.
