Tip: if it shows black, the color has yet to appear in the chat. My yellow was black, until someone got an itemdrop, displaying yellow letters in the chat.
For me, I had to re-enter the name every time the map changed or I joined a different server.

I get this when I'm playing on a server with crosschat from their other servers on various games
I made a shitty gradient in my name going from white to green to yellow, and having teamcolors in the middle.

Actually, from what I've seen, it's black until someone on the server finds an item during your play there. Then it becomes yellow.
I don't know if it resets on mapchange or not.

Depends on who views it, also. If you get an item so your name becomes yellow, someone who joins after that drop (and hasn't seen a drop yet in his playtime) will still see it black.
Also, it does not reset on map change, but I do believe it resets when you exit TF2.

I don't think you necessarily have to get the drop for your name to turn yellow.
With all the info, I'm guessing it's just black to everyone who joins the server until they see a drop. And then it is yellow.

I actually did fool a couple people into thinking there was a PDQ in the game. Everybody in the server joined in with me in telling them that the Engineer Update was out. :v:
