Major Update Speculation Thread v12: Layoffs Edition
I think the saddest thing is that eventually this subforum will be gone, and all we'll have left is TF2 General Chat in the Valve games subforum
If this happens, the game is not going to go poof-be-gone, it's just gonna stop being updated. I'm sure then the Mod Emporium will actually become a mod emporium once again.
Major Update Speculation V12: The One Where Everyone Overreacts
-snip-
the lead artist for TF2 is gone along with the guy that made all the pretty TF2 videos we've loved for the last 2 years D:
Oh man, I was fine until I read this but for some reason it threw everything in to perspective and I threw up
oh god TF2 please don't die
If anything, the departure of the art lead may or may not mean more eye-searing neon paint colors, I bet.
edit: all the boxes!

Agreed.
Not to play the part of the cynic, but do you seriously think that valve would let their economy experiment die out so suddenly?
The guy who just fixed the unusual particles in the compiler got let go (Marc something or another) :O
That was like... 2 weeks ago!
I'm very sad
Edit: Someone I knew and respected a lot left as well.
jeez shit is going down, I wonder what the reason is
all this positive news just in time for valentines day

valve is clearly attempting to eliminate those who are trying to fix known issues in tf2
ned quickly take your owl and get out of town before it's too late
Gabe noticed money was being redirected from his lunch fund. Something had to be done.
Major Overreaction speculation Thread v12: oh god valve is going bankrupt because of this
Gosh, I just hope the silver lining in this case means that we'll be seeing a brand-new video game under Moby Francke's art direction sometime in the near future. He (and the other talented Valve artists) is the whole reason I picked up Team Fortress 2 in the first place.
Guises, don't panic, something must be going on over Valve, but clearly this is a sign that hardware options were not viable. Altough, still sad to see some damn fine people leave the company we love.
Moby Francke, Half-Life 2 character designer and Team Fortress 2 art lead
Jason Holtman, director of business development for Steam and Steamworks
Keith Huggins, character animator and animator for Team Fortress 2 “Meet the” video series
Tom Leonard, software engineer for Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead
Realm Lovejoy, artist for Half-Life 2, Portal, and Left 4 Dead. She was also part of the original DigiPen-turned-Valve team that created Narbacular Drop, the inspiration for Portal
Marc Nagel, test lead for Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and patch updates
Bay Raitt, animator for Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal
Elan Ruskin, engine programmer for Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Matthew Russell, animator for Team Fortress 2 “Meet the” video series
:(
maybe they finished making ep3 so they're no longer required
I wonder if this affects the 15-minute video.

Without Bay, absolutely
must be pretty shitty getting a pink slip so close to valentines day, all things considered.
Without Bay, absolutely
maybe it was already finished

What the fuck why?!
That is a disturbing number of animators being let go. Wasn't there some female animator who gave a talk recently and hinted at working on animating for TF2 for some new "special project"?
I'm actually fucking furious right now unless they have a valid reason to lay them off I'm flipping shit
They wanted to make a one hour movie for TF2, then they realized it was too much, then 15 minutes and now some of them are leaving Valve, that's weird.
Has Valve said anything yet about this?
I'm scared
If this is the end, gentlemen, it's been a pleasure
What the fuck why?!
Speaking more seriously now for a moment, I legitimately have to wonder why these people specifically. I can understand having to perhaps fire people for economic reasons or possibly due to a desire to downsize their company, but for the most part these people seem like longtime or core contributors to Valve. Not a bunch of interns or new employees who failed to preform adequetly, which is what I originally thought when I heard of the firings.
What the hell could prompt Valve to fire a group of significant employees unless there was some serious internal dispute, economic strain, or something royally fucked up happened.

I'm going to quote what you said when I said this exact same thing:

Rough quote, sorry
