The fast-moving, high-damage at low-health weapon was always seen as a pickax. So when the split came, they made them both pickaxes so that people who return to the game aren't confused by something functioning like something that looked completely different.

I can already imagine it: "Bidwell was not able to put out the fire in the warehouse, which went on to consume the entire facility. From now on Spytech will be taking care of all the weapon and hat manufacturing. Don't worry about old items, it turns out Spytech had at least one of every item that we've ever manufactured. I personally burned the rares and one-of-a-kinds myself, and took care of the guy in charge of them. As for Bidwell, let's just say you might see him next time you visit a graveyard."
