They'll drop whenever you die, all they have to do is log into TF2 and it's in your drop queue.

If you're obsessive you can check your backpack on this site:

You'll see the earbuds as red in your inventory.
And you don't have to log out of Steam. When someone else logs in it'll kick you out and let you know that it kicked you out because someone else logged in.
