I suspect the Saxxy voting this year is going to tend to the big-names and leave any unpublicized videos/editors out. Last year's, while much less efficient, pinned it up against one vs another contest, leaving all of this out. Welp, time to go cry in a corner.
Actually, a thought occurs. For a small general boost to the Facepunch TF2 community, maybe we ought to fire up a topic with the OP containing all entries from Facepunch regulars. It ought to pad things a bit.

For a small general boost to the Facepunch TF2 community, maybe we ought to fire up a topic with the OP containing all entries from Facepunch regulars. It ought to pad things a bit.
Sounds like you've got a good idea there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In other news, my entry, performed by my sister and animated/recorded in SFM by me: It's submitted in Original Universe. I was inspired to make a 2D animation using SFM because SFM doesn't have the proper tools to easily make 2D animations and I want to get Valve's attention in hopefully improving importing images and textures. VTFs are very hard to work with and are very limiting. You can only pick wide rectangles (1024x256) or perfect squares (512x512) so it was hard to record, hence the black bars. (The main point of the contest is for SFM devs to push SFM to be a better tool for video making) Why it's submitted in Original Universe: *Characters: * Tootsie an original character that is the pink lady you see coveting the box headed trophy. * Green man at the end: Original character that is just a general symbolization of the SFM team. * Saxxy Sax: Used to actually be a certain Australian man, but I had to get rid of his likeness (face and head) and replaced him with the Box-Headed Saxxy Sax to stay within the rules of Original Universe submission. (think about how many identical golden muscled trophies exist, the only difference being the facial features...Oscars, Saxxys, etc.) *Music: * Original song with completley new lyrics, sang by my sister, remixxed and adapted from AL Duval's "Mary Mack". My process: * Wrote the Lyrics-->Recorded and remixed Song * Drew the animation stills-->scanned them-->relined them using GIMP (my sister did this) * Making between animations using Gimp-->Calculated animation timings to align frame rate with music * Turned tons of PNGs to animated VTFs using VTF edit (this uses a crazy amount of RAM...like 2GB!) * Finally, using SFM replaced a texture with the animated VTFs and recorded in time to the song and exported. Things I've learned: * VTFs are a bitch * animating, even simple stuff, is time consuming. * Directing someone to sing a certain way is difficult...used up more time then I thought. * I am a total noob at sound mixing, it's way more difficult then I thought * Invest in a better mic.... * VTFs are a bitch Some images of my work: * animation stills * lyrics I wrote with directions to help my sister with the singing * calculating the timing for the frames of the animation * testing an animated VTF in SFM as a proof of concept before starting on Saxxy Sax If you like the video, head on over to: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=108307388 and give it a vote, or if you aren't to sure of liking the video, at least give it a thought so Valve can make importing images, messing with VTFs, and animating in 2D easier in Source FilmMaker. - Alsoodani
They're not going to retool the engine to allow VTFs that aren't powers of 2 so people can use SFM for 2d animation, that's silly Why do you even want 2d animation in SFM? btw, powers of 2 are standard for textures because it ensures that it will be able to divide it in half when creating mipmaps, it's not a limitation it's intentional

I don't want them to retool VTFs (a mistake in my previous writing), but I rather want them to make it easier to do 2D animation. I didn't say VTFs were limited in terms of use for textures (in fact, it's very useful like you pointed out), it's the only option for images and it's limited in terms of manipulating 2D images for 2D animation. As for why I even want 2d animation in SFm, yes, there are better tools for 2D animation out there, but SFM is supposed to be the ultimate filmmaker and what better way to further improve it then having it able to produce 2D animation? That is a major part of why I created the video, to gain exposure to have Valve further expand upon Source FilmMaker.
If you make a banner for it, I'll make a topic and keept it updated.
Don't think I can make one at this time, but if you don't find anyone for a bit, I'll see what I can do :)
There's no chance this doesn't win.
Seeing that makes me feel horrible because the voice actor in that sent me multiple voice lines for multiple characters for an SFM video I was supposed to enter this year. And I couldn't even make it because garbage computer.
