Nobody worthwhile is being split. If you think the community is split it's because you're a pubbie. Frequent a good server and you'll find things are exactly the same as they were before, good players don't give a damn about halos or earbuds or anything.
Unless you're assuming the piss-take "Oh look a Mac user ban him!" is actually serious when in most cases it clearly isn't.

I'm giving my opinion that his idea is dumb, i have many of them and i don't see any problem of having them or not, Hats don't have anything to do whit gameplay since they are just cosmetic items that do nothing; just that they are rare.
Does idling affects your gameplay? no?, then don't whine about it.
And as i know, you don't need to idle to play a game.
