if you always get 1 item within those hours then how come you got 0 items? perhaps you've hit your item cap for the week. if not then the reason behind your problem is likely because steam is at its peak operating hours. Try idle in exactly 12 hours time or when steam goes under 3 million active users. If that doesn't work then yeah it's random chance being super random. You can't rely on a random system 100% of the time. So keep idling. and use an online backpack checker such as tf2b.com incase you're checking your accounts in game.
I've been idling for over 9 months mate. I know how to idle, and I regularly check for new items and I just started this week and I know about the 11 hours limit. Just after the Halloween update, I've been having some issues. Hence I'm asking if anything changed that maybe valve added something to prevent idling a little bit more.

I find it unlikely that you have actually not come across this bug before. Nothing has changed. Things like this happen commonly. I answered your question the first time. Also sorry for insulting your dignified intelligence and extensive knowledge about idling. I didn't realize that bringing up simple solutions was such an insult.

Offering 1 pair of buds if you can guide me thru getting my hl2.exe's down into the 200-280k memory usage range like some of the screen shots here so far i can only get mine to 475k each and run up to 15 of them. 12 gigs ram here. e-mail me at warheart209@hotmail.com if interested i have 15 buds so i can part with 1 for the help.

It should decrease the memory usage by quite a lot. Though if you were telling the truth about the buds is yet to be seen :).
Can somebody Team Viewer me and do this? I've tried this ten times already, and it always ends up saying that it can't find Steam.exe.
Can somebody Team Viewer me and do this? I've tried this ten times already, and it always ends up saying that it can't find Steam.exe.
Added, teamviewed & solved. Have fun idling.

Mine run at 700k someone help me. :(
Care to share your secrets with us poor idling peasants?
u just got to wait it out. after an hour or so minimized, the mem usage will drop.
You can try to use this software: http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem To decrease the memory load. The free/pro version only has a few feature differences, but the software is free to use with no limitation. See if it makes a difference for you. If I am not mistaken, the software has been auto set to clean the memory every 15min.
Wouldn't making all of the accounts connect to the same "server" be more efficient?

Anyone else's Hl2.exe files crash soon as u load in as text mode? mine are crashing soon as i load them even individually was fine for a day. [editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] soon as i launched my steam.exe from sandboxie it will say connecting to (accountname) then crash no hl2.exe will pop anymore but i dont get an error message and it just says im online but blue text not green so im not connected to "itemserver" like i was yesterday did they "fix" something?
God damnit, This looks rather complicated. I'd rather just buy 15 really cheap computers. hah.
God damnit, This looks rather complicated. I'd rather just buy 15 really cheap computers. hah.
It may look complicated, but it's very easy. For those who prefer using 1 bat file to launch 1 account at a time, without using a batch to start multiple, use this:
start C:\"Program Files"\Sandboxie\Start.exe /box:boxname "D:\games\steam\Steam.exe" -login username password -applaunch 440 -textmode -novid -nosound -noipx -nojoy -nopreload -sw -width 640 -height 480 +map "itemtest"
Alter the above to your needs and save it in a txt file and save it to *.bat. Like I said. With the batch line above, you can launch 1 account at a time, instead of a bunch. I prefer to keep control account which to launch first.
This is really awesome for gift farming. Just set up a dedicated server an a second computer, and then, instead of this
start /low H:\"STEAMFOLDER"\Steam.exe -login ACCOUNT YOURPASSWORD -applaunch 440 -textmode -novid -nosound -noipx -nojoy -nopreload -sw -width 640 -height 480 +map itemtest
put this into the .bat files:
start /low H:\"STEAMFOLDER"\Steam.exe -login ACCOUNT YOURPASSWORD -applaunch 440 -textmode -novid -nosound -noipx -nojoy -nopreload -sw -width 640 -height 480 +connect [server ip here]
All your idle accounts connect as spectator, so the gifts will spawn, the boss, however, won't spawn.
All your idle accounts connect as spectator, so the gifts will spawn, the boss, however, won't spawn.
thanks for the useful info :D yeah I tried running a dedicated server on the computer I use to idle... did not end well. And now my tf2 just crashes upon startup.
This is really awesome for gift farming. Just set up a dedicated server an a second computer, and then, instead of this put this into the .bat files: All your idle accounts connect as spectator, so the gifts will spawn, the boss, however, won't spawn.
Exactly what I've been doing since the beginning of the event. But I host on my PC and 9 idle accounts join it. Make sure to enter mp_idledealmethod 0. The weird thing is, in the beginning more than half of my drops were in the underworld, haunted, and now it spawns right on the cap point 70% of the times. On a related note: Does anyone know if it's still possible to have the gifts spawn faster than every 5 minutes? If yes how?
So I decided to try this sandboxie and it's working quite well except that after I'm logged in with 2 accounts I just get an error saying not enough memory, even thought I'm not using even half of my computers memory. Does anyone have any ideas to why this might be happening?

(to use this idle method to farm gifts I mean) Only got up to setting up my dedicated server and installing SourceMod on it though... :v: [editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] do the alt accounts need to be premium TF2 accounts for this too? I shouldn't think so, but who knows...

I didn't change anything it says im online but in blue text not green and im not getting any items cause im not in any server not in itemtest... [editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] Sooo is textmode broken now or what?

Will gifts spawn if it's a LAN-only server? (sv_lan is set to 0 but I think my new router isn't forwarding the ports, so effectively the dedicated server can only be seen from within the network)

Haven't tried it yet though.
I can't seem to get this to work. I have 9 seperate accounts, seperate steam folders, they are all linked with that shortcut, I did the batch files, and I set it all up in sandboxie full version. My main client is running off steam, in the folder "Steam" and then I sandboxie another steam client that is in a different steam folder, "Steam1". I use the batch file to connect and S3: Duplicate client connection: UserID: 4 SteamID 8aceb8 I get that on the dedicated server log. On the game client it's "STEAM validation rejected" Anyone have any ideas? I'm at a loss. I've been at this for hours and I'm not sure what to do. I'm running the dedicated server off my PC, then connecting with a client, that works fine, but then connecting with another sandboxied client just gives me that error. Help! http://steamcommunity.com/id/srredfire You can find me here if you want to talk to me, which I'd really appreciate or reply here if my problem is obvious. Thanks. Been working on this for hours and I cannot seem to get this right. Anyone feel like helping me out? I can also be added on steam here if you wish to talk on the
patch day messed up some stuff Zzzz
Is there a way I can do this on Linux? If not, what OS should I use? I wanted to do it on XP 32-bit but XP doesn't have mklink, and Vista and 7 are heavier on resources (and I am unable to find an...*ahem*...free working 64-bit sandboxie.)
I get that on the dedicated server log. On the game client it's "STEAM validation rejected"
If you are using the dedicated server that steam gives you (in the tools tab) then it will not work. you have to download srcds. there are plenty of tut's around the net that can help you download it. this video helped me a lot :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-6YyQjbIUA
