Well, it's actually tinted a little bit blue in the environment map, and most of the time appears blue-ish. When it looks purple, that's actually when it happens to be reflecting a red environment/reddish lighting, like the rocks in Hydro or near a brick building. That's also why it looks different in different shots.

I think we can all agree that it would be super hilarious if he had hairy legs, and we are well aware of this. Try to think about this realistically for a minute, though. This texture is going to be compressed down to a 256 and takes up half of his body, as opposed to the smaller surface area of something more hat-sized. It's just not realistically feasible to include something as fine detailed as body hair, as funny as it sounds, it just won't hold up. Notice that there is no visible body hair on any of the character's arms, not even on the Heavy. :( We considered it, but ultimately decided to follow the example of other character's in-game extremities, for these reasons, and I do think it was the best move after giving it some thought. Now with fanart, you can go nuts with whatever you want as you have no technical restrictions, can make his legs as skinny and hairy as you want, etc. and I am a full advocate of the Sniper being depicted in such a way.
there's plenty of 512x cosmetics ingame so I don't know why you've decided these have to be a 256x. I'm sure it could be a 512x if Valve decided it needed to be. The Triad Trinket paints on some body hair so I don't think it's against the style of the game for your item to have some.
I actually really enjoy the contrast of the lighter beige color of the shorts on red to the darker blue ones, and much prefer them to darker colored shorts on red as khaki is a bit more believable for what we're going on. Shorts the color of his pants remind me of what my piano teacher wore in the early 90's. I agree that having the skin color and all that kind of kills the principle of a light to dark gradient, but is kind of unavoidable so what the hey. It's been broken many times, and I don't see any of these things as hard rules, so long as they're broken for a reason (we took a few liberties with the gun as well that we hope will pay off). In this case, darker colored boots actually created more visual contrast in the lower area of the body, and causes more of a visual distraction.
You could avoided it more by not having such bright socks and by maybe having a dark gradient running down the legs subtly
I love the set btw, just feels a little unpolished. Your wood texture on the rifle needs work too btw, it doesn't look like other wood in TF2.

Also, we posted many WIPs. I don't know if we posted the legs, but if we didn't then it was an oversight. We have been very busy the past few weeks working on this set after work, and have had very little time for internets (also this site doesn't work for us at work anymore so I can no longer post during the day, urgh). This has nothing to do with what we "felt like doing", having an adult life is actually difficult v:
You are right about hair on the legs, but I definitely think you could have and still can really chisel in some features on the legs, especially around the knees. You already have the high-poly sculpt of the legs, it shouldn't be hard to translate that into a texture, much like how the hwm heads are done. (also, I think the items warrants a 512x512 texture).
You keep talking about how "funny" leg hair would be; I don't want it because it's "funny". I want it because it's logical and makes him feel too much like a finely-groomed porn star without them. He's a big game hunter who lives in his van, pisses in jars so he doesn't have to leave nest and certainly doesn't shave, as portrayed by his face.
If you don't want hair as a matter of preference, then that's cool. Artistic integrity is all you, I understand. Iunno, I just wanna at least voice why I think he should have some. I don't think it's a model issue either, I'm talking some lines around the ankle area on the texture.
Then again, there's no leg hair on the Bit Trip promos either. But Valve pretty much has a "no hair" policy for Scout items, going as far as to deem them incompatible on the workshop. The Demo side of that misc was just a mess the whole time.
Truthfully, I'm not a fan of any of these. I find the rifle too noisy, overdesigned grunge, the colors very clashing and poorly-fitting. I think it's just your style, though. Same reason I don't like the hat. It's a simple, beige hat. My favorite Sniper hat is the Crocleather Slouch. But it just clashes. The fabulous ass button on the brim, the way the colors all sort of look too detailed in their interactions. It's most noticeable in this image. If you look at it at a glance, it's just a splotch of beige surrounding a splotch of contrasting dark colors.
Iunno, I really like your models. They're amazing. I just don't like the way your style interacts with TF2. Your DOTA items are phenomenal, from what little I've seen of DOTA, they're basically perfect. I wish I had half the talent you had. Taste just isn't my taste. I'm only writing an essay on it because of the off chance you'll give a shit and cater to my whims next time you make models for TF2
I'm not really digging the bullets either. I get they're for an elephant gun, so they're huge, but they're bigger than the barrel of the gun they're attached to.
Edit: I didn't wanna talk about the taunt since this is the models thread, but since the taunt is open for discussion apparently, I'll throw my opinion out there.
Absolutely hate it. Very rigid, stiff animation, which I assume was made with the gun as an afterthought. If it was your first try at doing something that that, it was a good attempt, and you should keep practicing at it. I just think it's very stiff, uninteresting to look at, and "beginner" looking.
Because his huge forearms? As former military, this does not bother me. Even the Heavy wouldn't be swinging around his minigun like he does, were it meant to be realistic. We are talking about TF2. I can't actually tell if you're being serious, I think this post made me catch the Asperger's.

except when heavy does it he shows how heavy it is. in your taunt it looks very weightless.

yeah gotta disagree that he doesn't shave, just probably not often. He he never shaved he must not grow hair very well. But yeah, I don't see why he'd shave his legs.

The lens is blueish and reflecting a red environment in some of the shots, that's why it looks purple. I have no problem with that. About the wood texture, I've seen wood rendered in many ways in TF2, and I don't see what's so different about it that it jarring you.
Even on a 512, I wouldn't do that. There's too much stuff crammed into the texture to pull off fine details. Dry did darken the socks and color toned them a little to the team color, but it's not that noticeable outside of the texture. Like I said, I will run that by him. c:

I don't really think that looks too convincing D: It's a much smaller/subtler surface area, so it can get away with a little airbrushing. It doesn't work so well above and below his legs, to be honest, reads more like stubble or dirt and is kind of distracting. :C

This is just proof that there's no standard for it yet. The mercs are getting more and more naked with each passing update, be the one to set the standard for how body hair should look in-game.

Just an idea
I think the darker colours and gradient on the leg help it. Yours is sooo bright.
I think the problem is how he swings it at the beginning. He should be raising it and then let it drop on his shoulder, to show how heavy it is, not swinging it around like it was as light as a feather.

It comes with normal and team colored, I tried and aimed for a Diamond/Triangle shaped gun at side view but failed. I preferred writing then art when I was a kid so I have no depth.
Since I am going to keep this to mod myself if no one takes it, I am thinking of adding a Jigglebone to the arms or maybe a firing animimation. Have the arms slightly jiggle when you jump around but shoot straight out until you reload which they would return to there jiggly status.
Those legs are way too bold imo.

I think the problem is it is a shortened version of the Soldier's Halloween taunt with a huge ass rifle thrown in to make it as unrealistic as possible.
I'd do a reference to this. That's just me though.

The problem with making the shorts and boots darker is that now they contrast sharply with his leg skin, so attention is drawn to that area instead of the chest area. The white color scheme makes it not stand out as much, but suffers a similar problem, albeit not as specific. I feel like going with the darker color scheme and adding shitloads of hair might do the trick.
You're right actually, maybe put the beige shorts back. But not quite as light or something.
fixed forever

Hey guys, I finished these things, I will make a mod soon, one day I might get around to making it first person, but for now just a normal mod will do. Vote it up if you like it! :)

Oh, lol. I just did a quick retexture to show what I mean by how it looks kinda awful, and it looks pretty similar to what you just posted :D

I just don't think it looks convincing to do hair like that on the legs, and it sorta kills any of the lighting and slight texture in the skin itself, like a bad AO bake or soot or something. It also draws a sharp line that brings a lot of attention to the top of his thighs. I can't really say I'm too fond of the green idea with the dark boots, that's what my dad would try to wear to the golf course n 1992 before my mom would yell at him to change :C (Why is this stirring up painful fashion memories?) If his clothes were totally neutral, then I think it would work, but not with that bright red shirt he's got on. If anything, I think the socks could go a bit darker, possibly even the boots a tad, but I still prefer the lighter colors on Red.
Aaaaah, I dunno. I see your point from a practical view, but I'm not totally digging it from an artistic angle. You're totally right from a technical sense though. IT'S JUST A FEELING I HAVE. But yes, I will ask Dry about darkening some stuff.

your comments are really making me think your monitor's colour settings are way off tbh, sniper wears brown not green, the green hues are pretty subtle
anyway don't take it as a literal guide of "YOU MUST USE THIS COLOURS" I didn't even sample them from the TF2 pallette. Use your own brain to get ones with similar values that are less green.
I completely disagree about the gradient. People use em all the time to draw the eye in certain directions (towards the bright end of the gradient) so? also notice I painted on some very vague crappy shadows around the knee, you could do much better ones based on that sculpt your guy did. idk talk to your guy already, texture needs WORK
edit: kinda misread about the gradient and leg hair, oops
Did they completely take away the ability to even use the Item Importer? There isn't even a button to compile or anything. Or is it just me?
