• TF2Idle - An easier way to idle

I have Windows 7, 3570k @ 4.5ghz, 16gb of ram, and a gtx 480. I usually idle 20 accounts at once. CPU usage is usually under 10%, GPU usage is under 25%. PC still runs fast except ingame. I only get 10fps in Killing Floor for example. I dont know how that guy can run 40 accounts and play Assassins Creed at the same time. If its true, I think its time to upgrade to Win 8. Also, I suspect the reason for low fps is that the 20 accounts are saturating my video memory
Alright, here are my findings. I setup windows 8 pro on another partition, and after a bit of trouble managed to get everything working. I can get up to 18 accounts before I crash (whatever w8s version of a BSOD is), this uses every ounce of ram I have available. Keep in mind, I could run 12 before on windows 7. The increase in the number of accounts I was able to run can be explained away by the simple fact that this was a fresh windows install with no unnecessary programs or services running. The memory savings were negligible at best. (20-30MB or so per instance [if that]) I'd say something else is at work if you're actually capable of running 40 accounts. I don't see how that extra 4GB could more than double the amount of accounts you're capable of running over what I am. I like to run with a minimal page file, I'll increase it's size then report back to note if there are any differences. This has been a lot of trouble to test, I've run into problem after problem nearly every step of the way. Here are my system specs for those that are interested, http://i.imgur.com/3xmcX.png, it's a little outdated, but all the core components are the same. *UPDATE* Alright, so I increased the page file's max size to 4gB, this allowed me to get up to 24 accounts connected with room to go. Unfortunately my server is only setup for 24 slots and I'm not capable of accessing the settings from windows 8. (Need to go to sleep) With a large enough page file, I suppose 40 accounts might be possible. The movie and assassin's creed full settings seems like a stretch though. Can anyone comment on how much a page file helps on w7 or xp? I don't run one myself, so I'm not sure how it handles loading the tf2 clients into the pagefile. (Maybe w8 does it more gracefully?) I'm going to sleep now, I'll do some more testing tomorrow.
How much RAM does each of your sandboxes use? Have you set them up so one of them is server and the other one are client? I had 4GB RAM before and could idle with more account then you. If your OS runs out of RAM it should start using your pagefile. I am eagerly awaiting more results of win8 users. I can't get past that 33 sandbox limit while i still have GB of 16GB left.

Forgot to post these earlier.
is there any special settings to make TF2 uses pagefile? mine doesn't seem to use the pagefile though, can only run 8 acc + 1 server my specs are 4 GB of RAM and 2 GB of pagefile, or the pagefile is too small?
or the pagefile is too small?
depends on how many accounts you want to run at once
Well, how do you people make accounts not to disconnect from server? I created the 24 slots one, account are connected and working right until the system lags for a couple of minutes. After it they just become disconnected ("timed out" error). There are no problems with creating server for each account, but it takes more resourses. Thanks beforehand
Maximum pagefile size is 1.5x the amount of ram you have in an ideal environment.
i had 250GB of pagefile once
Maximum pagefile size is 1.5x the amount of ram you have in an ideal environment.
1.5 is a default size of the page file
1.5 is a default size of a page file
Exactly.
How much memory does hosting a server and having others connect to it save, or what's the benefit from doing it?
Does anyone know a way to force a program to use the pagefile?
How much memory does hosting a server and having others connect to it save, or what's the benefit from doing it?
*made correction in post below*
Does anyone know a way to force a program to use the pagefile?
I don't think that's possible.
If you're hosting it on the same computer, nothing, probably costs more. If you're hosting it on another machine, 10-20MB iirc.
Hosting a 24-man server increased the main server ram usage to about 850, while the rest went down 50-100 for me Personally i would recommend just keeping them as their own servers, just to save yourself the hassle(it won't really make a real-world difference)
Windows8 does have some small memory savings, though they don't appear to be significant enough to warrant a switch. Assuming 30MB savings average, you'd theoretically be able to run 1 more account for every 7 accounts in w8 over w7. I setup a page file on my main install [w7] (don't usually have one), and ran the same test, seeing how many accounts I could squeeze out of the available ram and pagefile. W7 is running 3 more accounts in that picture, when I tested w8 the server was only set to 24 players, w8 would have been capable of running those same 3. just testing running win 7 + win 8 in virtual box, I will let you guys know if I can get over the flickering and strange errors
just testing running win 7 + win 8 in virtual box, I will let you guys know if I can get over the flickering and strange errors
I'll make an clean win8 setup just to test that out.In a week.
just testing running win 7 + win 8 in virtual box, I will let you guys know if I can get over the flickering and strange errors
Currently running 40 accounts thanks to virtualbox. Feels good
You guys want to post screenshots? I'd like to see the ram usage you're getting per hl2 instance on both w7 and w8. Hell, even after all my testing I could come here and say, "Hay guys, I just got 95 accounts running when I switched to windows 8." Without system stats it's even more useless.
Currently running 40 accounts thanks to virtualbox. Feels good
That really doesn't make much sense. You have overhead from running two operating systems, plus the virtualbox instance. The savings for running on w8 shouldn't be so amazing that it can make up for that.
Maximum pagefile size is 1.5x the amount of ram you have in an ideal environment.
correction, i have 6 GB pagefile + 4 GB RAM, but having trouble running 8 instance of hl2.exe since they never take the pagefile at all
correction, i have 6 GB pagefile + 4 GB RAM, but having trouble running 8 instance of hl2.exe since they never take the pagefile at all
I'm sure it uses it to some extent, I'm not an expert on pagefiles, so I don't know exactly why, but a 6GB pagefile isn't going to act like 6GB of ram. It's a small improvement over how it would behave without a pagefile, but that's about it.
Hmm..in my command prompt for tf2, It says I connected, and then at the end it says "Received 1589100 bytes from item schema version 52B24E9E direct data;update is queued." What does that mean?
just testing running win 7 + win 8 in virtual box, I will let you guys know if I can get over the flickering and strange errors
Mind sharing system specs for both host and virtual machine? Thanks. How much ram you assigned to virtual machine? Have you done 30 + 10 or 20 + 20? that's also important.
