Reddit isn't a forum, it's a site that hosts tons of subreddits that are entirely volunteer moderator-run, without the reddit staff taking part in moderation unless it's directly against the site's rules (child porn, for example)
The problem is that people seem to think you have to look at subreddits with ragecomics and memes, when you can actually find intelligent discussion/useful stuff in a lot of boards, like r/gamecollecting and gameswap, and r/mechanicalkeyboards.

thanks but that's another community I'd rather steer clear of, I appreciate the assumption and implied discredit it does to what I said though. To be clear I don't think facepunch is amazing either, it's generally a very hostile community prone to ridiculous amounts of bandwagon thinking.
I have looked beyond subreddits with ragecomics and memes (hey look I mentioned one right there in my post, it's fucking horrible, how about that) and to say that reddit isn't a forum is overstating it's individuality a bit too much I think. Each subreddit could be compared to a subforum pretty easily, and each discussion/image/whatever not too dissimilar to a thread (though with amazing value of 'upvotes', so that often people will post comments for the explicit purpose of being upvoted, much like how back when facepunch kept a record of your ratings people would go out of their way to try to make posts collecting a certain rating, it decreased quality not improved it. To be clear, I don't think the upvotes concept is entirely bad for threads/links/whatever, just comments). I don't base my assumption of reddit as whole on it's few shitty subreddits which unfortunately exist only to shit out horrible content for bad people (fffffuuu etc), I base it on the comments, which sitewide from what I have read have been pretty bad in many cases. You yourself seem to agree with this to some extent, I see

It's always funny how 4chan is the "weird place of the internet" even though the userbase is nearly identical to sites like Reddit (49% neckbeards, 49% "normal" people and 2% THOSE people). There's even a subreddit for literal horse porn.

Not to mention some parts of 4chan (just like some parts of Reddit) are fine, and actually quite enjoyable. Many of the slower moving boards like /vr/ (retro games) and /co/ (Comics and cartoons) can be quite decent. It's boards like /v/ and /b/ that are really shit.

Large members of Polycount submitted models for TF2, only a couple of Facepunch members actually make TF2 models, even though they DO make up a large amount of the community contributed items.
Facepunch is kind of at the top of the lower tier as far as online communities go.
I'm a bit afraid to go on Polycount. It's like, that's a whole other world. A serious one.
