Guys, I have a serious hat idea.
An ice axe, half-imbedded into the Heavy's skull. It could be called the Russian Reading Hat.
Description could be, "Trotsky liked hats too, y'know."

What does an axe have got to do with reading? :frog:
Any updates on that steampunk skin pack?

lern 2 history bro
Leon Trotsky was reading something in his study, when someone came behind him and stuck an Ice axe in his head.

I hope you did not submit it under this name. Not only it contains grammatical mistakes, but it also doesn't fit with the model at all.
I like the model a lot, so I wouldn't want to see it coming in-game with a less-than-awesome name. And this one is, well, not awesome at all.
I'm not trying to be mean here.
Thats just a picture I posted here, I submited under the winning name on page 56.
I kind of disagreed with this, so I made my own (it only has tradable hats):

I still need an explanation about how the Tricorne magically fits the demo's character better than the Raincatcher :/
Meh. Still a matter of opinion. For some reason, though, I'm reminded of the Dr's Topper fix that makes it how it should have been (Uncle Sam). Can anyone link me that?
the tricorne is ugly and bland while the raincatcher is pretty and colorful!

Probably has something to do with the bright colors, which were not really meant to be in tf2. Hats with the same tones as the characters that wear them are worth more perhaps.
EDIT: what, the rimmed rain catcher is one of the brightest hats in the game! Right next to the hallmark.
Funny, as I made the raincatcher's texture fit the demo's outfit >.>
Also that would influence the "fits artstyle" criterium, not the "fits character" one.

well the hat goes on the character, so it should reflect something about him. Like the heavy and his ushanka (russian history) his football helmet (great strength) and his torque (soft side).
or like the scout and his Batters helm (baseball theme) his baker boy (Boston background) and his tossle cap (bad attitude).
Still doesn't explain why 2 pirate hats for demo get different "fits character" ratings.
and his rimmed raincatcher resembles his alcoholism :v:
so does the tricorne but still
because the tricorne is discreet (the best type of hat) and matches the surrounding area on the model (the collar thing) while the raincatcher... actually i have never seen a raincatcher in-game so v:v:v
Oh shit mod talk uhhh... so yeah, magneto helmet.
is it possible to have a particle effect on a hat that only goes off during building, hotrod style?

You could probably embed a particle effect in a blank "building" animation.

Don't judge it on as it appears ingame atm (Raincatcher's texture got majorly assraped by the painting system). Judge it after the texture patch or with Daimao's paint fix.
You could probably embed a particle effect in a blank "building" animation.
Sweet! Now I just need to buy a modelling program, learn how to model, learn how to texture, learn how to make particles, learn how to embed particles, learn how to animate, learn how to compile, learn how to get it in-game and get it rejected for copyright reasons!
I'm so close!!
and his rimmed raincatcher resembles his alcoholism :v:

uhh why did i get disagrees do you guys not know that the raincatcher's original name is "traditional drinking hat"
http://www.fpsbanana.com/skins/96077
i mean the pirate thing too, but yeah
perfect plan
EDIT:
No one seems to like your opinions Keychain, maybe you should keep them to yourself....

Maybe I can be "hat ideas guy". You need one of those, right?

I still hope the paint fix update comes out soon.
Although I prefer the Tippler's Tricorne over the Rimcatcher, I won't say it's because the Rimwatcher isn't wellmade.
I think they're both fitting, I just like the Tippler better since it looks more like the stereotypical pirate hat.

Does Daimao's paint fix include the fixes from this?
Guys, can we please talk about mods now? Enough of personal preference on hats.
How would I go about changing the particles on the Unusual hats?
Is there any particle editor or something?
under launch options type -tools and launch
then you can select particle editor in a drop down bar

There's an in-game particle editor which you can read more about on the Valve developer Wiki.

Here are some tutorials:

Wow. This is my first megathread experience, and it's pretty awesome. Not to mention full of totally awesome stuff/ideas by some really talented people.
And now on to the reason I posted: agreeing with pedroion, now that Daimao's done and gone and fixed the paints, can he fix the unusual effects too? :P In particular Ghosts / circling icons are the major eyesores (in my opinion). Obviously we'd have to be careful not to piss people who've spent $$$ on unusuals off, but I still think there's plenty of room for improvement without treading on anyone's toes.

Let's not get into the discussion of which hat looks better, it's a matter of personal preference. I like my hats to catch your eye, but not break with the style or seem out of place, so I prefer the Raincatcher's colouring over the Tricorne's, but I can see where people saying "the Tricorne is more discreet" are coming from. I was purely wondering why people making charts of how much the hats fit the characters and artstyle (and presumably putting thought into them), and putting the Raincatcher below the Tricorne in the "fits character" area.

Not exactly, I changed the textures a couple of times after that but didn't bother to upload them for every revision. Daimao's pack contains the version that Valve is going to implement though. It adds a subtle paintstroke to the paintable area.
But for the overall effect that's a pretty good indication of how it will look.
Just put it in the game files in the right directory (copy the structure from the .gcf)
