The mining light is just an addon, it won't remove the default hat.

Normal hats remove the default hat and replace it with a new model.
Hatless hats remove the default hat without replacing it with a new model.
The Mining Light and Soldier's Stash adds a model without removing the default hat.

And just to add to this for clarity, this is changeable via editing items_game.txt, but client-side model changes get overridden by the server's version. So any such changes wouldn't work online.
After most my mods getting deleted in the old update, I realized I loved some of them, but most the old emporium ones are gone, allowing me to lazily get rid of them.
So now I'm on a download spree, downloading fixes and shit.
