Also, something else that bothers me about paint is that I had to destroy my alpha map, which made it look very good. Now, the wood looks bland, and the paint is overly shiny.

Move the phong mask to a normal map and use the alpha channel in the diffuse texture as a tint map. (Hint: take a peek at the Wiki Cap)
Stick the alpha in the normal map. Look at the wiki cap for an example of how to do this (off the top of my head)

No, those colors are comments, so if I remove the two slashes, I can use that color without having to paste the correct color values in there. It works really well.

Oh god, now that paint works, the default, non-painted mask looks terrible. The stripe now looks like a solid blob of color. I can see why Valve has trouble making painted hats look good.
