I've made the Alien Swarm Hat Prolificinator Download, to let you use a different model for each class's alien swarm hat, but I will not be releasing it to the general public because unless you make 9 copies of the hat and hex them, you WILL screw up your game. You also have to hex every new hat you install. PM me and I'll send you the script you need (Fun fact: If you looked into the gibus fixer you could probably figure it out yourself if you wanted to, I'm not too terribly inventive at scripting)

Sounds like a little to much work just for some skin replacements...
However... doesn't stop someone else making it paintable, but then again it wont get accepted unless he agrees to it.

Which is why there's no public release. And there's no better way, far as I can see, to do it. What it does is define entirely new models to be used in each class's folder. Those models don't exist unless you hex them, so you have to do that for each class. As well, there aren't any hats pre-hexed for those new models when you download them, so you have to do that, unless for some reason this gets popular enough that mod-makers include a compatible version.

Replacing a hat with the hat you want is quite easy if I'm right you don't have to do so much stuff.
Quick question: what happened to that rumoured Medic Polycount pack? Still dropping in a future update or what?
PixelHUD overhaul is almost finished. Only the Polycount alternates are left, I want to know if there's a point in including the Frankengear Medic.

While responding to this, I realized that I could probably do most of this myself. I'm going out-of-city soon, but when I get back, I'll begin work on simplifying the process. (This work will consist of re-hexing a dummy hat to fill the space defined by the script. Basically, I'm just going to rehex the alien swarm hat 9 times to
"models/player/items/scout/custom.mdl"
"models/player/items/sniper/custom.mdl"
"models/player/items/soldier/custom.mdl"
"models/player/items/demo/custom.mdl"
"models/player/items/medic/custom.mdl"
"models/player/items/heavy/custom.mdl"
"models/player/items/spy/custom.mdl"
"models/player/items/engineer/custom.mdl"
"models/player/items/pyro/custom.mdl"
and include these models in the release. If someone's bored and wants to do that while I'm gone, it'll just speed things up.)
HOWEVER
You WILL still have to re-hex downloaded custom hats to make them replace the alien swarm hat. This is because no hats released thus far will be hexed properly to match. I'll just remove the chance of accidentally breaking something.
