Milestones reward you for being good at the game, drops reward you for actually playing it.
[editline]12th December 2010[/editline]
If it doesn't feel rewarding to you why the fuck do you bother with it.
[editline]12th December 2010[/editline]
It feels much more rewarding dying once while playing and getting a hat than waking up, looking at your computer screen and going oh, I got a hat. Plus in idle servers no one gives a shit while if you're playing people are all like oh nice find and all.

Its like this argument.
You're not being rewarded for you starting dumb arguments with your dumb opinions, why the fuck do you bother with it.

I bother with it because Items are forcefully dropped into my backpack when I'm playing. :colbert:
I got 3 Festive Crates for idling for 5 hours.

You'll need to explain that to me better.
You'll need to explain that to me better.
"It doesn't feel rewarding getting items"
"Why bother with items then"
"Because as I play they are put into my backpack"
Better?
That doesn't mean anything, you don't need to care about item drops if you don't want to, so why the hell do you bother idling to get them.
That doesn't mean anything, you don't need to care about item drops if you don't want to, so why the hell do you bother idling to get them.
I rarely idle, I get my items when I play.
Good for you then.
I see people trading hats for that god damn crate, come on guys, you'll get some on wednesday anyway, and whats inside is probably coupons for the mann.co shop or something.
Milestones reward you for being good at the game, drops reward you for actually playing it.
No.
Milestones reward you for playing the game.
Drops reward you for starting the game, it reward you even if you don't play after you started the game.
Drops do not feel rewarding because they occur randomly, they give you random things, and you don't have to be actively playing to be given anything.
Milestones don't reward you for playing the game since if you suck you're never gonna get the achievements.
And drops are supposed to reward you for starting the game, which is why they added a cap to them, but you assholes keep ruining it. Happy?

No, not happy.
I won't be happy until you understand why the drop system isn't better than milestones.
Milestones encourage you to play the game, it gives you challanges that keeps you interested, and encourages you to become better at playing the game.
The drop system does nothing but reward you for starting the game. It does not reward for anything else but starting your game and joining a server. It rewards doing nothing, it forces you to wait for items and doesn't encourage you to actually play the game. It reward playing the game and doing nothing equally, and since you are rewarded for doing nothing you are not encouraged to play the game. Idlers did not ruin the system, the system was already broken.
I went on a server, and some guy was selling a festive crate for a hat or Metal.
I then went on another server, got a trade request and someone gave me the crate for free.
I like people oike that :D
I don't think you understand.
The point was to reward people for playing the game.
You'd go and play the game for a while and then get an item because you actually did something in the game!
But then people were like DURR WE DON'T NEED TO ACTUALLY PLAY LET'S JUST IDLE and so they used programs to idle, then Valve gave a free hat to people who didn't idle and they all whined, then came idle servers and lazy bastards from all around the earth just stayed there being the lazy bastards that they are getting shit without actually playing the game.
Then they improved the drop system to reward people who actually played the game more and those who idled less. Because rewarding players was the whole damn point.
If there's a mistake in the timeline correct me, I wasn't playing at that time.
[editline]12th December 2010[/editline]
You just need to differentiate what it was supposed to be and what it ended up being because of the community.
If there's a mistake in the timeline correct me
There were idle servers before and after the idling program :eng101:
It didn't end up being that way because of the community, it ended up being that way because the drop system was a horribly flawed and easily abused concept that was unnecessary and that Valve should have abandoned soon after it was introduced.
The community didn't ruin the drop system, because they did with the drop system exactly what it encouraged them to do.
Start the game, and do whatever the hell you want, or don't, just start the game and spend time.
With the milestones, you were given challenges that you had to play the game to complete.
You weren't rewarded for just starting the game, you were rewarded for playing it.
It was a system that was fun and fair for everyone.
I idle overnight when I know I won't get much TF2 time in for the week.
I wish I had a festive crate now, hopefully one will drop for me.
I cross my fingers for you.
I just found 2 festive crates.
what do

Eh, if we only had milestones there couldn't be new weapons, crafting, hats or trading. The drop system adds a lot of versatility to the game.
I just think that idling ruins all the fun, but whatever.

SHUT UP already about fucking idling god damn.
I don't see the problem with idling, how does it affect others?
It doesn't, people just like to bitch about how other people go against their "morals."

Um, I'm not sure how spending hours achievement grinding for weapons that aren't necessarily upgrades is "fun and fair".

Unless you've never gotten a hat drop. Ever. Like me.
And people on idle servers usually never say anything because they're IDLE.
I started TF2 Beta up and saw I had a Familiar Fez and I was all "OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG" and then someone told me everyone had one and then I was all :smithicide:

Actually, they'd probably just add new achievements, derp. And they added the drop system top balance it. For say, if you run into someone who's been playing since release and you started yesterday and they have all the weapons and you're just now trying to get the "Grey Matter" achievement, you're pretty screwed. Plus, how is idling any different than achievement farming? It's the same principle: do this, get these.
Dang, what are you guys gonna bitch about next?
Next someone will claim having an alt account for farming items and storing excess crap to unclutter your main backpack is "Wrong."
I used my alt account's crap I harvested to get two Festive winter crates.
The secret to success in TF2's trading system and economy is very simple: Amass tons of items. That's really all there is to it. Buy an extra copy or two of TF2 when it drops down to like $5 during a sale, and you'll never need to use the Mann co store for anything ever again.
I share my alt account with 3 of my friends
